Joe Torosian

Good Evening!

Is it the finality of football that makes you feel kind of sad when the playoffs start? Not about seasons ending as much as careers. You watch teams and groups of seniors from spring forward and it all ends on a bad call, great catch, fumble, or missed tackle…and like that (snap of the finger) it is over for the rest of your life…

Almost like the death of a friend.

In particular as I was getting the updates from Bergstrom I kept thinking of all the players I was never going to see again. Same with the reports from La Serna. The whole reason I chose the Mead-TC game was because I wanted to see Matt Fregoso…because I didn’t know if I was ever going to see him play again.

I love football at this level but there is a quality of sadness to the whole design of it…and its because of the finality.

Does anyone choose to quit playing football? Or is it the fortuitous or unfortuitous nature of the universe that decides?

And like everything else in life…you live with it…and without.

I’m so sick of these slimy folks I work with trying to tether themselves to my bold assertion that Muir was the dark horse team to watch in the Southeast…Stang Fan can you get on here and cover my back.

***

At the same time, I was leading the way in shoveling dirt on the grave of Schurr…Did not think they would stand up to Baldwin Park’s defense after struggling against Donald Bernard’s ‘Long Haired Freaks’ the week before.

***

“My brackets are still perfect Joe!” Said ‘The Suave One’ to me as I exited the Temple City-Rosemead game last night.

***

Odd everybody I spoke to last night seemed to still have perfect brackets.

***

What stadium was I at last night? I sure didn’t see anything that would indicate I was at Marinelli Stadium…

***

Note Loyal Fanview Readers: I didn’t pick against Maranatha last night, I only said they could be in a tough position, because of a grueling regular season, to fall…they didn’t…and, depending on the health of Josh Jones, I like them against San Dimas this coming week.

***

I’ll be enduring the warm smell of colitas rising up in the air the day after Thanksgiving…

***

Give credit to Jim Singiser for coming clean and saying the refs made the correct call soon as he saw the video last night. I particularly liked what he told me around midnight to give out his cell phone number to anyone that wanted to say something bad about his team.

***

“I bet you could have fried an egg on the top of his head,” I said to Bad News Barker when I heard the account of the game back at the office.

“Try more like a double thick T-bone steak,” said Bad News.

Last Add Arroyo: While the Knights have not won a first round playoff game since 2005 (Schurr) they have lost their last three (Temple City 2008, Whittier Christian 2009, & San Dimas 2010) by a total of 11 points.

That’ll turn any head gray…or clean…

The Temple City fade in the second half against the Panthers came exactly 11 years to the evening of its second half fade against Santa Ynez at home in 1999. Very similar. The 1999 Rams featured a first year HC in Mike Mooney and a talented running back named Kevin Brown.

***

It was a lot of work but I was happy to say I saw live 24 of the 32 teams that made the playoffs from the Mid-Valley & Southeast Divisions…Of the remaining 16, I have seen 14 in person.

***

Didn’t flat out predict the Village Christian win over Azusa, but boy the temperature was just right. The Crusaders could move the ball and the Aztecs hadn’t been challenged in the fourth quarter all season.

***

Last Add Undefeated: Off the top of my head (and I welcome correction) the last time a team in the vicinity went undefeated during the regular season and got blown out in the first round was Rosemead in 2005.

The Panthers that season went into the playoffs a perfect 10-0 and had allowed only 75 points before facing La Serna in the first round. They were only challenged once by South El Monte (the epic 30-21 game at The Swamp), had a big time back in Deon Sumler (26 total touchdowns), they registered 61 sacks, and had a stud ‘Bandit” safety/linebacker in Paul Molina.

…And they lost at home 21-6 to the Lancers who finished third in the Del Rio.

***

Little concerned about Whittier Christian’s Rudy Robles…he hasn’t had a carry since the beginning of October.

Stay thirsty my friends…
