(La Salle) – Muir (5-2) held La Salle (7-4) to eight points through the initial 14 minutes of play and continued to assert command through out en route to an easy 63-36 win over La Salle Monday night in the La Salle-Temple City Holiday Classic.
The Mustangs forced 25 turnovers, recorded 21 steals, and outrebounded the Lancers 39-27, handing them their third straight loss.
DeShawn Hayes led all scorers with 23 points, going 10 for 14 from the floor where he also racked up four blocks, a steal, and completed a double double with ten rebounds. Justin Knowles scored 8, dished five assists, and had 8 steals.
Tevin Polk was the other Mustang in double figures with 11 points. Michael Cockrell featured his 8 with a pair of treys in the third quarter and also pulled down four rebounds. Polk, Knowles, and Arlando Daniels also each scooped up four boards. The Mustangs stretched a 23-8 run from early in the third to midway through the fourth to pull away. They led by as much as 30 on several occasions to put it in the refrigerator.
Turnovers and lack of offensive consistency in both midrange and perimeter did the Lancers in. Their only lead (3-2) came just a minute into the game on a three point play underneath by Gary Mkrtichyan who finished as the team’s leading scorer with 13 points and 8 boards.
