On The Couch: June 11, 2009

After a mini-vacation I have returned with thoughts and observations.

The biggest high school football story yesterday was that Nick Montana signed with the University of Washington.

My thoughts are that if this guy was not named Montana he would be scrambling for a school.   No doubt he has the genes to be a good player, but watching him last season against Muir made me wonder what the hype was all about.

He had trouble reading defenses and had no pocket-presence.  He seemed to get “happy feet” on more than one occasion.  If it wasn’t for Muir turning the ball over, the game would have been close heading into the second half.

There are half a dozen quarterbacks in the Mid Valley area that can lead Oaks Christian just as well as Montana did last season and most likely this season.

I had a hour the other night to talk horse racing on the show.  There were a couple of questions that I left opened ended.

The biggest was should the Triple Crown races have more time in between.  My answer is always going to be “no”.  But for the sake of the sport something needs to be done to generate interest.

I don’t think stretching out the Triple Crown is the answer, its getting the older horses to stick around and compete for a few more years.

Growing up it wasn’t rare to see a eight-year old John Henry win the Arlington Million.  But now were lucky if they race during their four-year old campaign.  Which frankly isn’t much to look forward to.

One last thing, every time I make a disparaging comment about the Dodgers or Lakers they do the opposite of what I have pointed out.  So for today only no slamming either team.
