Spartans Continue Rio Hondo Dominance

Kristene Hossespian's 10 points in the first half helped La Canada.

(Temple City) – The last two seasons, La Canada has been unstoppable in the Rio Hondo League winning 18 of 20 games. The Spartans were bringing a 13-game winning streak against league opponents as well.

After a slow start in 2010-11 going 4-11 prior to La Canada’s game against Temple City. The start of the Rio Hondo League was exactly what the Doctor ordered for the Spartans with a 44-36 win over the Rams.

Kristene Hossepian led La Canada with a game-high 16 points with 10 coming in the first half. Junior Sydney Zarate continued to assert herself as a hard-nosed scorer with 12 points.

The Achilles Heel for the Spartans all season has been its inconsistent free-throw percentage. Tonight, La Canada managed to hit 15 of 20 from the charity stripe to help hold off a late charge from Temple City.

Hossepian and Zarate accounted for seven of eight down the stretch to help stop any Ram comeback from materializing.

Temple City came out fast in the first quarter hitting its first two shots from the field to take a quick 4-1 lead over the Spartans. The Rams would hit a shooting slump midway through the first quarter and watched a three-point lead turn into a five point deficit at the end of the quarter.

After both teams traded free-throws early in the second, La Canada continued its run to go up by 11 points with five minutes remaining.

Kristina Wu started to Temple City on the right track late in the first half scoring five points in the final two minutes to cut the lead to seven.

The Rams came out on fire in the third quarter with Lina Kimoto hitting a three-pointer to make the score 24-20 Spartans.

After Yessica Frias made a free-throw, freshman Sarah Borland drained a three-pointer for La Canada to stop the 4-0 run to extend the lead back to six.

Anna Valazza kept Temple City in the game with a three-point play after a foul to cut the lead back to three with less than three minutes to play.

Valazza kept the Rams in the game late.

Lauren Barsamian and Hossepian hit two-big shots late in the third quarter to extend the lead back to six.

Borland made a huge shot to start the fourth to make the score 33-25, only to have Valazza make three from the top of the arc to answer the Spartans score.

Down the stretch though it was La Canada’s ability to get to the line and make free-throws to begin the Rio Hondo League season on a winning note.
