Rams Falter in Fourth; LC Wins

The Temple City Bench Looks on

(Temple City) – La Canada scored only seven points in the fourth quarter but Temple City managed just two and fell to the Spartans 43-38 Friday night in the Rio Hondo League opener.

The game was tied at 36 after three quarters and both teams came out cold in the fourth. Neither team scored in the final period until Dario Civon hit a pair of free throws with 4:21 left in the contest.

Matt Faber hit a basket later in the period which turned out to be the only field goal scored by La Canada in the fourth. All the Rams could muster was a driving layup by Brandon Lee late in the game as they shot 1 for 9 in the last frame.

“We need to go to the basket. You always have success when you go to the basket,” said Temple City Coach Rich Hollinger. “We were just standing out there firing it up from the perimeter. You’re not going to win that way. We played pretty well overall but we have to go to the basket.”

La Canada jumped out to a 6-0 lead to open the game before the Rams got on track. Caleb Halversen and Paul Yeo both hit threes to counter a pair of treys by Civon as La Canada led 14-12 after one.

Jordan Hill warmed up in the second quarter for Temple City hitting consecutive buckets and one from behind the arc scoring eight points in the period. Lee also buried one from long distance but Faber sank a three for La Canada and the Spartans led 24-23 at the half.

Neither team could establish momentum in the second half. Temple City outscored La Canada by one in the third to get even after three but then couldn’t get the ball to drop in the fourth.

Hill led Temple City with 16 but he was the only Ram in double figures. Civon had 15 for the Spartans and Faber finished with 11.
