Damien Wins Again

By Matt Schuler

(La Verne) – There wasn’t one single player who stood out amongst the rest on the Damien Squad, but it was the way they played as a cohesive team unit which led the Spartans to a 73-32 blowout over visiting Charter Oak on Wednesday night at Damien High.

Leading scorer Chris Reyes scored 16 points and blocked three shots and Gian Demano came off the bench to add 13 points. Kevin Mansour chipped in eight more and Jared Dizon scored six as the Spartans improved to 17-1 and 3-0 in Sierra League play.

The win makes it four in a row for Damien after losing to Gahr, which is the only blemish on the season thus far. The Spartans were winners of 13 straight before the defeat.

Demano’s coast-to-coast lay up capped off an impressive 11 point first quarter for the senior guard and it was only a 22-15 lead after one.

Damien then put together a 13-2 run in the second quarter and it was 35-17 after a two-hand Reyes throw down with 1:45 remaining in the first half.

The Spartans outscored Charter Oak 18-4 in the second quarter to build a cozy 40-19 halftime advantage.

The Chargers looked a little sluggish, but leading the way for C O was Emil Dawood, who scored 10 points. Christ Gilchrist added seven points and Ryan Hernandez chipped in four for Oak.

Clayton White’s “and one” bucket with 4:11 in the third pushed the lead to 31.

White only chipped in four points, but he led the team in assists and steals with four each. J.P Chakbazof hustled on the boards grabbing six strong rebounds for his team.

All the starters were out with 1:54 remaining in the third for the Spartans, but the reserves only expanded the lead and the score was 71-27 three minutes into the final quarter of play.

Damien is averaging nearly 67 points after 18 games and now the Spartans get a shot against Ayala as they try to add to their win streak. Charter Oak falls to 7-11, 0-2 and looks to rebound against a tough Chino Hills team.
