Spartans Undefeated in Rio

La Canada's Mike McGlashan led all scorers with 22

(Monrovia) – Mike McGlashan and Dario CiVon combined for 42 points to lead La Canada to a 65-52 win over Monrovia Wednesday night in the new digs at Monrovia High.

The Spartans maintained their grip on first place in the Rio Hondo with their fourth consecutive league victory.

McGlashan didn’t warm up until the second half scoring 18 in the last half including 12 in the fourth quarter. He finished with 22.

The Wildcats were down by 13 at the end of three and tried to make a push in the fourth cutting it to eight at one point. But McGlashan hit a big three and also buried five of six free throws in the final period to help ward off Monrovia.

CiVon got LC going early by knocking down four thee pointers in the first quarter. Matt Faber who does a lot of damage inside stepped outside and also canned a three in the first as the Spartans jumped out to a 19-12 lead.

La Canada extended it to nine at halftime outscoring Monrovia 12-10. Then early in the third the Spartans blitzed Monrovia to pull away. McGlashan hit three straight buckets to lead LC on a 10-0 run to open the third and before you could say Darvin Jackson the Spartans were up by 19.

Derrin Jenkins hit a pair of threes and scored eight of his 10 points in the third quarter to keep the Wildcats within striking distance. They pulled to within 47-34 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cats cut it to 54-46 in the fourth but McGlashan and company had enough to hold them at bay. Nick Long nailed two from behind the arc in the final period and Michael Carter had a couple of hoops but it wasn’t nearly enough to catch Tom Hofman’s crew.

LC is 17-2 overall to go along with its perfect 4-0 record in league. Both of the Spartans’ losses have come at the hands of Montebello.

Long and Carter both had 14 for Monrovia. Carter had 10 of those points in the first quarter.
