Three-Peat for Lady Panthers

Sydney Hua (10) led all scorers with 13

(Rosemead) – The Rosemead Girls clamped down on defense and did enough on offense to beat Arroyo 39-27 Friday to capture the Mission Valley League title.

The Panthers improved to 8-0 in league while Arroyo dropped to 6-2. It was Rosemead’s second win over the Lady Knights this year assuring them of their third consecutive MVL crown. The victory was also the Lady Panthers 24th consecutive in league.

“Defense was the key. We let them score too much early but anytime we can hold them to under 30 we should win,” said Rosemead Coach Jay Gauthier.

Sydney Hua scored six points in the first quarter and Amanda Iglesias added four to lead Rosemead to a 14-8 first quarter advantage. Melody Gauthier, daughter of Jay, knocked down a three ball in the second and also scored inside for five points as the Lady Panthers increased the margin to ten at halftime.

The Lady Knights scored just six in the quarter as they struggled to put the ball in the basket. Arroyo was 3 for 17 from the field in the second quarter alone.

Arroyo’s shooting woes continued in the third as it managed only one field goal by Cassandra Magno mid way though the quarter. They were a little better than Rosemead though, which only got a pair of free throws from Gauthier.

“I told the girls that the good news is that we held them to two points in the quarter but the bad news is we only scored two ourselves,” Jay Gauthier said. “We’re still a pretty young team and plus sometimes the Arroyo game gets a little ugly.”

Rosemead rebounded to score 13 in the final period to seal the deal. Gauthier and Christine Giang each scored a pair of buckets. Liz Cruz nailed a three for Arroyo and Arlene Reyes scored five but it wasn’t nearly enough.

“Sometimes Arroyo gets on a run but today we made sure they didn’t,” Jay Gauthier added.

The Lady Knights scored in single digits in three of the four quarters and managed just 13 points in the second half.
