La Canada Stuns In Opening Round

Cailan Howey battles for the board.

(Glendora) – The Spartans knew heading into the season that there would be some up and downs in the Girl’s Basketball program. La Canada found a huge high point in the season with a stunning opening round win over St. Lucy’s 52-40.

Cailan Howey helped provide the defensive effort with 18 rebounds, seven steals and led the team with a game-high 14 points. Howey has progressively gotten better as the season wore on and the team has responded.

The Spartans defense managed to suffocate the Regents in the third quarter with a 15-2 run to head into the final quarter up by 33 points.

It appeared La Canada would cruise at the beginning of the fourth quarter but St. Lucy’s fought valiantly to the bitter end with 22-7 run to cut the lead to twelve by the final buzzer.

If nerves were a concern for Coach Tamar Hill, they were quickly put to rest for her young squad when freshman guard Sarah Borland scorched the Regents for eight points in the first four minutes of the game.

With youth being served, senior Kristene Hossespian poured in 10 points in the second quarter to continue the incredible offensive outburst for the Spartans.

La Canada had only managed to average 41 points per game prior to tonight’s game, but had 45 heading into the final quarter.

Bench play also played a key part in the Spartans First Round upset of St. Lucy’s as Michaela Anderson played physically against Nicole Zugastie and also ended the night with seven rebounds.

Zugastie ended the evening with just 13 points to lead the Regents.
