Beginning today midvalleysports.com will be going around softball circles for the latest interviews and updates on the players on fire or slumping. This will be a weekly column that will be out on Mondays.

Good Start To The Season

Instead of playing in the Duarte Tournament, La Salle head coach Rich Diaz made sure the Lancers “team building” trip take place in Palm Springs.

With sophomore pitcher Rachel Albright starting all four games played, the La Salle managed a 3-1 record in the tournament.

The Lancers also managed to defeat Marymount (which it has met the last two years in CIF Finals) easily.

If the first game is any indication on how the La Salle will battle as they were down 5-0 on its last out to send the game to extra innings. The Lancers then scored six runs in the eighth for the win.

The only senior on the starting line-up is LMU bound shortstop Sterling Schuster.

La Canada Four

Anyone who follows Spartan softball is quite familiar with Catherine Horner, Anna Edwards, Lauren O’Leary, and Lauren Cox. All heading to Division I schools.

Expectations are high in La Canada due to returning eight starters from last year’s semifinal team. The only player off last season’s roster is Megan Martin who is playing at Pasadena City College.

La Canada head coach KC Matthews:

Rough Start

Maranatha got dealt a blow before the season even began when Boston College bound Annie Sommers was injured during the soccer season. It is possible that she may be gone the entire year.

It will be tough for the Minutemen to replace Sommers who last season batted .505 with three homers. Look for Katie Czuchaj to be the catalyst for the Marantha’s offense in 2011.

Still High On

South Hills second baseman Lexi Robles. The sophomore has incredible range and showed the ability to make the tough play.

With a team that features pitcher Sydney La Follette, catcher Brittany Rodriguez, infielders Kristen Stewart, Sam Nieves and Taylor Fisch it’s easy to forget about Robles.
