Charter Oak Charges to Semi’s

CO's Samantha Valadez hit a homer in the first.

(West Covina) – Charter Oak scored 13 runs with two outs enroute to a 17-4 victory over La Salle in its second game of the Charger Classic.

The Chargers are 2-0 with a good chance of playing in the semi-finals on Friday after the win today at Big League Dreams. The Lancers need a win against Covina to be in the fifth or seventh place bracket after the loss.

Samantha Valadez, Monique Villasenor, Cassie Andrews and Jayme Chesler each hit a homer against sophomore pitcher Rachel Albright.

It didn’t start out well for Albright during the opening inning with two outs and Nicki Sprague at third. Valadez came up to the plate and timed Albright’s fastball perfectly to knock it to the deepest part of the park for a two-run homer.

After walking Villasenor, Andrews singled and Hailey McGuigan’s bloop singled plated Villasenor. Andrews followed on the Raeleen Tellez’s single for the fourth run of the first inning.

Although playing at the Dodger Stadium replica at Big League Dreams, the nightmarish game continued for Albright after allowing Sprague on with a single, La Salle got the next two outs. That’s when the hit parade began in the second with Valadez doubling in Sprague.

Back to back home runs by Villasenor and Andrews to almost the exact same location made the score 8-0.

The Lancers finally got to Andrews in the top of the third inning with a blend of singles and drawing walks. With one out, Meaghan Allen singled. Madison Worley and Sterling Shuster each worked their way on with walks to load the bases. Stephanie Ferri then doubled in Allen and Worley.

Sterling Shuster at short.

Last season’s Championship MVP Katie Smither grounded out to second that allowed Shuster to score from third. Albright then hit a shot to short that was misplayed that scored Ferri.

The Chargers finished the game scoring the next nine runs in the third and fourth inning to blow the game completely open.

Ten batters came around in the third inning while Charter Oak scored four times. Brooke Clementson started the rally by getting on with an error. The Chargers strung together two hits in a row by Jennifer Gonzalez and Allison Strycula to score Clementson.

The bases became loaded for Charter Oak with two straight walks before Andrews’s single scored both Strycula and Gonzalez.

Chesler hit homer in the fourth inning with two outs and one on to make the score 17-4.

The game was called due to time.
