Spring Arrives for Aztecs

Azusa getting ready in May

By Aaron Castro

(Azusa) – Azusa hit the field Tuesday in the second day of its second week of Spring practice coming off three consecutive Montview League Titles.

It didn’t used to be the case but now much is expected from this program. There is an increase in the amount of students practicing compared to years past.

Coach Joe Scherf worked with the offense the majority of the time I was observing practice. Something that looked completely different four me was the 4 vs. 4 scrimmage on one half of the field while there was another on the other half. It’s interesting and yet it allows you to work both sides of the field and compressing the field, therefore slowing it down for the players and having a shorter learning curve.

There were more than a few big bodies on the lines, which said something for this upcoming season. There were also some rangy and talented kids at the skill positions. Although it could be wide open at the top it is expected that the Aztecs will be the team to beat in the Montview League this season along with La Puente.

The Aztecs rolled udefeated through the regular season last year before a disappointing loss to Village Christian in the first round of the CIF Mid Valley Division playoffs.

Azusa graduated several key seniors but the Aztecs are expecting big things from quarterback Jake Martinez, running back/linebacker Eric Perez, cornerback Desmond Reed and OL/DL Alex Tapia.
