Bonita-Damien Scrimmage

By Aaron Castro

Bonita hosted Damien Friday night in a final scrimmage as they prepare for the season that kicks off next week.

The game plan for both teams was extremely vanilla as they worked their field goal units the first fifteen minutes.

Sophomore quarterback Tanner Diebold showed some great flashes, but also showed at times that he’s only a sophomore. Senior quarterback Aaron Burgett also saw action tonight behind Diebold and looked solid.

Both Burgett and Diebold had multiple passes blocked by Damien’s left defensive end.  Receiver/Safety Garrett Horine was not active on Friday, but will be ready to start in next week’s Smudgepot against San Dimas.

Bonita’s Victor Magallanes showed great hands with his five catches tonight. He will add depth to an already talented receiving corps. The Bearcat ground game looked very strong with serious gains made by Reggie Turner, Cameron Griffin, and Seth Balentine.

The young Bonita defensive front played well, stopping the Damien downhill running game and with defensive end Ryan Ramirez recording multiple sacks.

The Bonita secondary intercepted the Damien quarterback twice and would have taken it to the house except for a whistle from the official.

The fans came out in droves in support of a Bearcat team that advanced to the Southeast CIF Finals last year.
