(Covina) – Covina and South Hills lined up and banged heads for a while Friday night in a final scrimmage before the season kicks off for keeps next week.
Who won? I don’t know. Does anybody really win a scrimmage? Covina scored a couple of times; South Hills scored a couple of times. Both quarterbacks – Billy Livingston of Covina and Vince Hernandez for South Hills looked solid.
Hernandez burned the Covina secondary bad on a bomb for a touchdown but Livingston made some nice throws as well – especially a touchdown pass to Vinny “The Dude” Venegas on the first play from scrimmage.
It was good to see Jamie Canada back on the field for South Hills. Canada and running back Jamel Hart are a dangerous duo.
Best hit of the night was a shot that was delivered on a block by Covina’s Gevontray Ainsworth. Hernandez broke up several pass plays at cornerback for the Huskies. Yes, the South Hills’ QB is going both ways. But isn’t that common now in high school football circa 2011?
It got a little chippy early and there were several hits delivered after the whistle. South Hills players came to the sidelines saying that Covina was talking smack- telling them they were soft. But again…it’s football.
Funniest line of the night was delivered by Covina Coach Darryl Thomas. After an official called holding on one of his o-lineman, Thomas screamed “I need a number!”
“It was your right tackle,” said the official looking somewhat confused. “No, I need a number!” Thomas yelled again to the referee in a serious tone. Thomas finally broke into laughter knowing full well that all of his players were wearing black jerseys with no numbers.
When the official trotted over to the Covina sideline Thomas told him “oh okay, it was one of those Covina guys.”
Covina opens the season next Saturday night against West Covina at Covina District Field in what could be the premier game of the weekend. South Hills is at District Field Friday night vs. Colony.
