Anding Shines, But Saugus Prevails

(Santa Clarita) Saugus quarterback Jared Carbajal rushed for 197 yards and three touchdowns in the Centurions 31-20 victory over Burroughs on Thursday night.

Carbajal still wasn’t the standout in the Week Zero season opener. That honor goes to Zander Anding.

In a losing effort, the Burroughs tailback could not be contained. The 6-foot, 185-pound Anding carried the ball 16 times for 345 yards. He also returned a kick-off 83-yards for one of his three touchdowns.

The Indians scored first with 5:04 to play on a 72-yard run by Anding to take a 6-0 lead. The extra-point was missed.

Four minutes later Saugus’ Tyler Watt scored on a 1-yard run to tie the score. Carbajal added the deuce to make it 8-6 at the break.

In the third the Centurions added a safety after Burroughs botched a punt in its own end zone.

Anding brought his team back with 18 seconds left in the third on a 66-yard run. The point after made it 13-10 in favor of the Indians.

Saugus jumped back on top to start the fourth when Carbajal scored on a 50-yard run and Angie Weinner split the uprights to make it 17-13.

Burroughs answered immediately via Anding’s 83-yard kick off return and took a 20-17 lead.

The Centurions began to wear down the vistors midway through the fourth when Carbajal scored for the third time on a 1-yard run and Watt added his second scored with a 5-yard run in the game’s final seconds.
