Huskies Fall Short

South Hills and Colony battle.

(Covina) – The first game of the season for South Hills showed glimpses of a bright future led by Jamel Hart and Vince Hernandez which nearly upset Colony. The Titans survived 30-29.

After methodically draining time with Hart running the ball, the Huskies needed a furious final drive with less than a minute remaining.

After two incomplete passes, Hernandez found Danny Sheehan for 14 yard to continue the drive. Two plays later, Sheehan came up big again for a first down after a 12 yard reception. Hernandez scrambled for 33 yards with 20.6 seconds remaining in the game. Hart capped off an eight-play drive with a 20 yard reception to get South Hills within one point.

The Huskies lined-up for a two-point conversion for the win only to be flagged for a false start. South Hills head coach Steve Bogan decided to tie the score and head for overtime. Unfortunately for the Huskies the point after attempt went wide left to secure the win for the Titans.

Hart finished the evening with 89 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown on the ground.

Fans were treated to an onslaught of points for the first eight minutes of the first quarter.

Bryan Harper found Darius McCants completely open for a 26-yard strike to put Colony up 6-0 with 9:22 remaining.

South Hills failed to flinch as Jacob Faris returned the kickoff 51-yards. Four plays later, Hart scored on the “Wild Dog” from five-yards out to take short lived one-point lead.

Three minutes later, a trick play became the undoing of the South Hills as Samajie Grant threw a perfect spiral to Kyle Curry.

Moments later, Faris took the kickoff 99-yards to get the Huskies crowd on its feet.

The teams continued to be deadlocked until the 8:55 mark as Dontel James scored from two-yards on a powerful run up the middle.

Each team settled for field goals with the Titans taking a 23-16 lead into the second half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Hernandez tied the game at 23 with a five-yard bootleg run with 6:52 remaining in the game.

Hernandez finished the evening 10 for 17 for 96 yards with a touchdown and interception. Sheehan closed the night out with seven catches for 64 yards.
