EM’s Martinez Showcases Skills in Win

(Baldwin Park) El Monte quarterback Brandon Martinez put on a show against Baldwin Park Friday night, throwing four touchdown passes and rushing for over a hundred yards,  in the Lions 43-17 victory at Braves Stadium.

Martinez started quick with his first touchdown strike a 34-yarder to Gus Bentacur.

Baldwin Park drove down the field and kicker Omar Caldera hit a 50-yard field goal to make it 7-3 at 7:34 in the first quarter.

The Lions put the game away over the next quarter and a half with three more Martinez touchdown passes, two went to Juan Ceballos and the other to Memo Silva making it 28-3 at the break.

The Braves came out tough in the third quarter driving the ball and capping it off with a three yard touchdown run by quarterback Eric Robles to make it 28-10 after the extra point.

El Monte didn’t let up and pounded the ball on the ground and finished it off with a one yard score from Bryan Luevano putting up the Lions 34-10 after a 2-point conversion failed.

Manuel Santa Cruz came in relief for Martinez and the former starter went 4 of 4 for 76-yards and a 22-yard score to Silva.

Baldwin Park gave the ball to Giovanni Resendez and he took it 80-yards to paydirt making it 40-17. The Lions closed the scoring with a 34-yard field goal from Luevano to make it 43-17.

Martinez finshed with 215-yards passing and four touchdowns, he ran for 116-yards.

The EM defense intercepted three passes, Santa Cruz, Bentacur and Frank Lopez also grabbing a BP toss.

Robles final numbers were 49-yards passing and three interceptions. Michael Moran got some snaps and went 3 of 5 for 58-yards.

El Monte (1-0) plays at La Puente next Thursday, well Baldwin Park (0-1) host Lancaster.
