Panthers Flagged for a Loss

Panther "D" tough but comes up one point short.

(Rosemead) – Rosemead was unable to overcome a barrage of penalties, a 90 yard kick off return, four turnovers, and two missed extra points in a 20-19 loss to Rowland Thursday night on its home field.

The Panthers had one last shot to win the game when they held Rowland on fourth down at their own 24 with 1:58 left. They moved the ball to the 42 but that’s where quarterback Adan Guillen was picked off by Andy Andrade and all had Rowland had to do was take a couple of knees to end it.

It was the second interception of the night thrown by Guillen and both picks came courtesy of Andrade.

Matt Eddy gains ground against Rowland

“We just didn’t execute on offense, running or passing,” said Rosemead Coach Matt Koffler. “We turned the ball over, we missed two extra points, we missed a field goal…we turn the ball over, they score.”

The officials didn’t help either team’s cause. At last count there were 25 flags thrown overall including a horse collar penalty on Rosemead that occurred while the defensive player made the tackle in front of the ball carrier.

“It was unbelievable,” Koffler said.

The turnover bug bit early for Rosemead. They took the opening possession and in five plays, and a couple penalties, drove down to the Rowland 25 before coughing it up.

On the next series, Rosemead drove 50 yards in nine plays to go up 7-0 in the first quarter. Matt Eddy capped it with a two yard.

Rowland used the first Andrade interception to get in the end zone. Andrade’s interception set up Rowland at the Rosemead 14. Three plays later George Campos hit Joel Delgado in the end zone. The extra point was missed leaving the Panthers up 7-6.

Rosemead increased the lead to 13-6 with just 17 seconds left in the first half. Steven San Miguel hauled in an 11 yard pass from Guillen to finish a long 80 yard touchdown drive.

But while Rosemead needed a long grinding march to score, Rowland only needed 13 seconds. On the ensuing kick off Terry Ford picked up the ball at the ten yard line and out ran the Panthers kick coverage for a 90 yard score to tie it at 13.

“That was huge. I think that caught them by surprise,” said Rowland Coach Craig Snyder of the momentum shift.

The Panthers had dominated time of possession but all they had to show for it at the break was a tie.

In the second half they took advantage of a short Rowland punt and started at the Raider 28. They stayed on the ground for eight plays with Andrew Gibson scoring from a yard out for a 19-13 advantage. The extra point was blocked and that turned out to be crucial.

Rosemead held Rowland on the next series and looked to build on the six point lead. But again they fumbled the ball and Rowland recovered.

In the fourth quarter Campos connected on a three yard touchdown pass to Johnson Lamwatthananon. Esteban Garcia booted the extra point in what turned out to be the game winner. The Panthers were called for that bizarre horse collar penalty which kept the drive alive.

Rosemead missed a 44 yard field goal in the fourth quarter as well to add to their misery.

Guillen completed 15 of 22 for 166 yards but was hurt by the two critical interceptions.

Eddy had 26 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Deandre Douglas had two catches for Rowland for 67 yards. Campos passed for 96 yards and a pair of scores.

Rosemead dropped to 0-2 while Rowland improved to 2-1.
