Bushala, Sunny Hills Shine against Pioneer

By Corey Kwok

(Buena Park) – Sunny Hills’ tailback Kalil Bushala had 37 carries for 289 yards for Sunny Hills in a 35-6 rout of Pioneer Thursday night. Sunny Hills improved to 1-2 while the Titans remain winless after 3 games.

Pioneer had three first downs in a row on the opening possession but the drive stalled on the 10th play at the Lancer 22 as a 40 yard field goal attempt sailed below the crossbar. Both teams went 3-and-out to keep the first stanza scoreless.

Sunny Hills broke through in the second when Bushala marched the Lancers from their own 25 to the Pioneer 10 in 8 runs. That set up Matt Larsen’s 10 yard strike to Cameron Rizzi for a 7-0 SH lead.

The Titans’ ensuing possession ended abruptly as Jeff Barry intercepted Daniel Castro inside midfield and returned it 24 yards. Sunny Hills wasted no time as Bushala found daylight on the next play from 25 out to make it 14-0, with both TDs separated by 18 seconds.

Pioneer then ate up 4:20 on an 80 yard 12 play drive that culminated in a 21 yard touchdown pass play from Castro to Patrick Jimenez. The Titans trailed 14-6 with 3:18 left until halftime. 30 seconds before the break however, Sunny Hills cashed in on a 15 yard pick six (off a Pioneer tip) as Daniel Perez trucked it in to bump the SH lead to 21-6.

The Lancers scored twice more in third quarter to put it out of reach, controlling possession on 21 of 26 plays in the frame. Larsen found Barry for a 25 yard TD before Bushala bookended the eventual final with his second touchdown from 14 yards out. Larsen finished four of eight through the air with 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Veteran workhorse running back Tony Botello had 58 yards over 17 runs for Pioneer. The Titans’ quarterback, Castro, completed 11 of 16 for 149 yards and the lone TD to Jimenez. Aaron Avalos, Ruben Robles, and Angel Marquez all had 11 yard carries to round out the Titans’ offense.
