Vikings Chew up Yardage, Hoover

Hoover's Alex Godinez has the wood put to him by View's Jose Gonzalez.

(Glendale) – Ignacio Castanada and Jose “Nacho” Zamora combined for 322 yards rushing and four touchdowns to lead Mt. View to a 34-21 win over Hoover Thursday night at Glendale High.

Castanada scored on runs of 42 and 26 yards in the first half and Zamora hit the end zone from 55 and seven yards out also in the first half as the Vikings raced out to a 28-0 lead.

View scored only once in the second half and it was Castanada again who provided the electricity with a 91 yard kick off return early in the fourth quarter.

“There’s no doubt with those two guys and when we block we are a running team,” said Mt. View Coach James Wilson. “It was a good win for us. We had a good first half but we made some mistakes in the second half and we have some things to work on. But a win is a win and we’ll take it.”

Down 28-0 Hoover took advantage of Mt. View miscues to get back in it. In the third quarter, the Tornadoes put together a 12 play, 60 yard drive to get on the board. Alex Rangel capped the march with a two yard quarterback keeper.

Early in the fourth Daniel Yepremian blocked a Viking Punt and Roney Escobar fell on it the endzone for the score. Rangel ran in the two point conversion and suddenly it was 28-15.

Castanada delivered the death blow on the ensuing kick off. He fielded the boot at the nine yard line and ran right though the Hoover coverage team for a 91 yard sprint to the goal line to put the Vikes back up 34-14.

Another mistake cost Mt. View later in the period. Hoover punted, the Vikes muffed it and the Tornadoes took over at the View 33. Three plays later, Zach Hanson hauled in a 17 yard strike from Rangel for the final score of the night.

Luke Tabayoyong carried the ball 26 times for 133 yards for Hoover. He also had three receptions for 21 yards.

But it wasn’t enough to overcome Castanada (15-160, 2 TD) and Zamora (18-162, 2 TD.) Mt. View also had a couple of touchdowns called back including a 64 yard run by Zamora in the first half.

“Hoover kept playing hard. You have to give them credit. We now have to get ready for Bell-Jeff next week,” Wilson said.

Mt. View improved to 3-1 with the win while Hoover fell to 0-3.
