First Quarter Uprising Enough for Apaches

(Arcadia) – The Apaches made it a short night for its first stringers as they scored on its first-five possessions of the first half enroute to a 37-21 victory over Temple City.

Any worry that Arcadia was looking ahead to its Pacific League opener were eased on the first drive of the game as Rodney Arnett took a pass from Myles Carr for a nine-yard touchdown. The Apaches never looked back on offense the remainder of the game.

Carr put up video game like numbers in the first quarter going seven of nine for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Playing only one half, Carr finished the night 10 of 13 for 252 yards and four touchdowns.

Carr threw to six different receivers.

The story began and ended in the first quarter for the Rams, who were unable to move the ball early or found ways to make it easy for Arcadia to runaway and hide early.

After Temple City went four and out on its first drive of the night, the Apaches wasted no time finding the end zone two plays later as Carr found Alex McElwee for a 36 yard score.

Getting to the Arcadia 22-yard line, the Rams fumbled while driving for a score only to lose the scrum for the loose ball.

Three plays later, the Apaches facing a first and 25 from its own 38-yard line Carr connected with Taylor Lagace for a 62 yard touchdown.

Every time the Rams looked to find an open hole or seam, Arcadia’s speed closed it in a hurry and stopped any momentum. Temple City didn’t have an answer on offense or defense in the first quarter.

Trailing 37-0 with 4:34 remaining the Rams mounted a 12-play drive that began at its own 20-yard line. A steady dose of Jojo Torres (with runs of 4, 9, 2, and 1) and Roger Tsung (with runs of 14, 7, 9, 23, 4, and 1) had Temple City knocking on the door of the end zone only to have Arcadia’s defense stuff Tsung’s last attempt for a touchdown near the end of the half.

The offense finally began to roll for the Rams in the second half as they took the drove 73 yards on 14 plays with Jaime Dea scoring from four-yards out.

Dea finished with 85 yards and Tsung reached 100 on the night to help with the Temple City rushing attack.

Mikal Quintanilla and Kasmir Khaliq hooked up for two scores in the fourth quarter to get the Rams within 16 points. The last score came with eight seconds left in the game.
