Eddy Leads Panthers To Victory

Matt Eddy runs wild against Titans

(Rosemead) The Rosemead Panthers used a strong performance on defense and 212-yards and two touchdowns rushing from Matt Eddy to beat the visiting San Marino Titans 23-14 at get their first win of the 2011 season Friday night at Marinelli Stadium.

“He (Eddy) broke tonight. That’s what we’ve been wanting him to do and he had some nice runs tonight “ commented Head Coach Matt Koffler of Eddy’s performance.

Eddy got the Panthers on the board first with 3:25 left in the 1st quarter when punched the ball across the goaline to complete a nine play 51- yard drive. Jose Esparza added the extra point and Rosemead had the 7-0 lead.

With 8:51 left in the first half, the Titans got even on a six yard run from Matt Wofford. The score was set up by a turnover by Eddy that gave San Marino the ball at the Rosemead 24-yard line. Wofford’s stat line for the night was 105 yards passing, 40 yards rushing and the lone score.

The Panthers took the lead back midway through he second quarter when Adan Guillen found Daniel Villalobos in the endzone on an 11-yard pitch and catch. Guillien was efficient for Rosemead hitting on nine of 17 passes for 109-yards and the score.

Late in the third period the Titans went on an eight play drive that took them all the way down to the Rosemead 13 but on fourth and six, Wofford’s pass fell short.

It didn’t take long for the Panthers to capitalize on the defensive stop. Eddy took the hand offf from Guillen and found a crease and outraced the Titans to paydirt.

San Marino got back to within six points with 7:31 left in the final frame. Kwame Do capped a 16 play 69-yard drive with a five yard run. Do finished the night gaining 118-yards on 19 carries and the score.

When a six play drive for Rosemead stalled at the Titan 21, Esparza came on to boot a 38-yard field goal to pretty well ice the game for the Panthers.

With time still left on the clock San Marino went on a march from their own 29. The march was cut short however as on the third play from scrimmage, Wofford was picked off by Christian Garcia to put the game on ice.

“These kids fight hard and it was a good job by our staff. We just keep plugging away and it builds character. It’s been and up and down roller coaster and one of these times we were going to win and we won tonight” said Koffler after the game.
