(El Monte) – It took a little extra work but Charter Oak finally got it done as they beat Arroyo in overtime (check that- six overtimes) 48-42 to win SGV Shootout IV Saturday at Arroyo High. The Knights forced the extra sessions when they tied it at 18 late in regulation.

The Chargers then scored four times but the Knights matched them on each possession. The Chargers put it in the zone again and then finally a Steven Rivera pass was batted away in the end zone  to preserve the victory.

“”Yes we’re happy but you know there is always room for improvement,” said Charter Oak assistant Dominic Farrar.

A.J Powell made the big plays for Charter Oak but Rivera, Chris Rodriguez and Jeff Salazar did their part for Arroyo in giving the Chargers all they wanted.

Baldwin Park beat Alhambra 24-18 in the semi finals to capture third place.

The Braves are headed in right direction under James Heggins. They lost to the Moors earlier in the day but then took care of Rowland twice to earn a trip to the semis.

Darrian Cazarin is throwing the ball well for the Moors and Rowland Coach Craig Snyder is impressed with his returning quarterback Michael Ball.

It’s only July but Gladstone seems to be back on track.

The best quote of the day came from Alhambra offensive coordinator Manny Ruedaflores. “Winning isn’t about Xs and Os it’s about Jimmys and Joes. Talent is the most important thing,” he said while observing the action.

I could be wrong but I don’t see Los Altos winning just one game again this year. The Conquerors took out Northview and Gladstone early and Covina and Diamond Bar late. Arroyo beat them 36-15 for their only loss.

Rosemead looked like Rosemead – always competing, battling, flying to the ball, but the Panthers have lost a lot from last year’s team that appeared in the CIF Finals.

Northview sufferred some huge losses as well to graduation. The Vikings did manage a 27-18 win over El Monte in their third game.

West Covina lost one Johnson in Ricky but has another one coming back in quarterback George. The Bulldogs fell to Montebello, Covina and El Monte.

Wilson, under first year Coach Brian Zavala, went 3-2 in the shootout including a win over third place finisher Baldwin Park.

Trophies were presented to the first , second and third place finishers. Arroyo also took second at the Bonita Tournament last month.
