Game Night: Southeast Division

Can Arcadia bounce back? Will Burroughs take Glendale lightly?

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6

All games begin at 7 pm.

PACIFIC LEAGUE

 Burroughs (2-0, 2-3) at Glendale (0-2, 1-4)

Last Year: Burroughs 35-6

Indians continued its mastery of Arcadia last week. This week, Burroughs gets a team that has improved on offense but still has trouble stopping anyone. Of course, Zander Anding will more than likely run for 300-plus yards again this week.

Evan Norton to Michael Davis, everyone knows it’s coming but still can’t stop it. Nearly pulled the upset against Pasadena and now face a more dominant defense in the Indians.

Burroughs 42-21

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7

HACIENDA LEAGUE

West Covina (2-0, 5-1) at Bonita (0-1, 2-3)

Last Year: West Covina 55-21 (c0rrected), 37-33 (Southeast Division Championship)

The Bulldogs have amassed over 1,500 yards on the ground with two-thirds coming from Jimmy Frazier and Aaron Salgado. Chris Solomon is getting back into the swing of things of offense. Defensively, George Castro and Raymond Amaya each have three sacks.

Giving Coach Eric Podley an extra week to prepare makes the Bearcats very dangerous coming into the game. Cam Griffin has been solid at running back and the main receiving threat is Garrett Horine. Bonita will need to find away to make Chris Caballero beat them with his arm.

West Covina 35-14

Diamond Ranch (2-0, 3-3) vs Los Altos (1-1, 5-1) (Ganesha)

Last Year: Diamond Ranch 48-14

Riding a three-game win streak, the Panthers face a surprising Conquerors team. Diamond Ranch has done it with smash-mouth football and great defense allowing just 38 points during its streak. Nick Gibson stepped up with two touchdowns in the win against Diamond Bar.

Facing a must-win situation Los Altos did everything they needed to do in its win over Rowland. Shane Virnala passed for two touchdowns and Scott Tibbs ran for two. Only twice this season has the Conquerors allowed more than 30 points in a game.

Diamond Ranch 35-21

Walnut (1-1, 1-5) at Rowland (1-1, 2-3) – Rowland 21-17

PACIFIC LEAGUE

Burbank (2-0, 3-3) at Arcadia (1-1, 3-2)

Last Year: Arcadia 48-20

Bulldogs will be missing three-key offensive players when they face the Apaches. With the loss of Quortney Brazier the defense takes a hit as well. Look for Teddy Arlington and Herman Castro to have big games on offense.

To say Arcadia is coming into this game mad is an understatement. After sleepwalking through three quarters against Burroughs, they finally woke up and almost beat the Indians late. The offense wants to prove that last week’s first three quarters were a fluke and that the defense is as physical as any in the Pacific.

Arcadia 24-7

Crescenta Valley (2-0, 4-1) at Pasadena (1-1, 2-3)

Last Year: Pasadena 21-14

It is obvious that the Falcons have all the tools to be the surprise team in the Pacific this season. With Nick Ruiz on both sides of the ball making big plays it adds to the depth of Crescenta Valley. Marro Lee continues to impress and is healthy. The Falcons would love to sweep the Pasadena schools.

We knew that the Bulldogs can flat out play on offense. Brandon Cox has matured into a good quarterback and with a receiver like Riann Simpson, Pasadena can put up some numbers. Problem is on defense which gave up a ton of yards and points to Glendale.

Crescenta Valley 35-28

Hoover (0-2, 0-5) vs Muir (0-2, 2-3) (Glendale) – Muir 42-7

SUBURBAN LEAGUE

Norwalk (1-1, 1-5) at Bellflower (2-0, 4-2)

Last Year: Norwalk 34-14

Rashaad Penny and Jacquise Hooper ran wild over Mayfair in a loss last week. Now they face a stingy Buccaneer defense that has allowed just 104 points in six games. It’s possible that the Lancer offense might be rounding into form.

Travis Newberry ran for 188 yards and Ryan Hunley added another 196 yards in its 30 point win over Glenn. Jason Salesulu leads the team with four sacks.

Bellflower 28-21

La Mirada (1-1, 2-4) vs Glenn (1-1, 3-3) (Excelsior Adult School)

Last Year: La Mirada 48-6

Matadores were able to fix what ailed it with a win over Artesia last week. Kevin Dillman took most of the snaps in the win and went 14 of 19 for 185 yards and two touchdowns. La Mirada combined for 221 yards running the ball.

The Eagles aren’t quite ready for primetime as it lost by 30 to a good Bellflower team. This week isn’t a must win, but they need to go .500 to make the playoffs.

La Mirada 35-14

Cerritos (0-1, 0-5) vs Mayfair (1-0, 3-2) (Gahr) – Mayfair 63-0

DEL RIO LEAGUE

La Serna (0-0, 4-1) vs Whittier (0-0, 3-2) (California)

Last Year: La Serna 61-6

A week off for the Lancers will have them freshened for the Del Rio portion of its schedule. Two weeks ago, O.J. Medina ran for 171 yards in the win against Warren and the defense returned to form by allowing just 7-points. Frankie Palmer will only get better as he matures into the quarterback role.

After a great 3-0 start, the Cardinals are looking to find its rhythm again after dropping its last two games. Whittier runs all day and with some impressive runners in Chris Velasco and Anthony Viramontes. Omar Luna will need to pressure La Serna’s offense and cause havoc. Luna continues to have a good year with eight sacks on the year.

La Serna 42-14

Santa Fe (0-0, 1-4) at El Rancho (0-0, 4-1)

Last Year: Santa Fe 21-0

Now is the time for Chief Nation to show up and play its style of physical football. After getting crushed in four of five games during the preseason, Santa Fe can make a statement by beating the Dons at home. Joey Davis has run for 350 yards and Christian Mahlstede has 19 receptions heading into the game.

Stop me if you heard this before. Last year heading into the Del Rio opener, El Rancho sported a 4-1 record and looked imposing heading into league play. It’s Groundhog Day for the Dons and they need to make sure a replay of the last six games (2-4) of last year doesn’t occur.

Santa Fe 28-14

California (0-0, 4-1) at Pioneer (0-0, 0-5)

Last Year: California 16-7

The Condors needed to defeat the Titans last year to get a berth in the playoffs. This year Cal faces Pioneer in the first game of the Del Rio League and its two teams heading in different directions.

For the second straight week the Condors beat an Almont league team as Montebello became the victim. Gabe Lozano ran for 100 yards and Drew Castro was perfect through the air.

In its last four games the Titans have managed to match its first game total in points scored. That might be the biggest reason they have started the season winless. Tony Botello still leads the running attack for Pioneer.

California 35-14
