Gevontray Ainsworth runs wild against the Saints

(Covina) The Covina Colts scored 27 unanswered points then cruised to a 39-21 victory over the San Dimas Saints Friday night at Covina District Field and take control of the Valle Vists League.

Gevontray Ainsworth did damage on the ground to the tune of 160-yards and three touchdowns while Billy Livingston did it through the air for 270-yards and two scores

San Dimas, who hadn’t lost a game since the 2011 opener against Bonita, looked to keep their streak alive and managed to get on the board first. With 4:29 left in the first quarter, Andrew Espinoza scored on a five yard run. Dillon Corona added the extra point and the Saints were in the lead 7-0.

Covina came right back on the ensuing drive to come withing one point as Ainsworth capped a seven play 65-yard drive with a six yard run. The extra point appeared to be good but was ruled no good. From 1:19 left in the first period until early in the final frame, it was all Colts.

A 14-yard touchdown strike from Livingston to Andrew Carrillo was sandwiched by four-yard run and and 10-yard catch for scores by Vinny Venegas. When the dust had settled from the scoring barrage, Covina had a commanding 27-7 lead.

“Our assistant coaches did a great job in getting the kids ready and putting together a great game plan for tonight. The kids did a great job executing that game plan” commented Covina Head Coach Daryl Thomas after the game.

Shawn Kennedy broke the scoring drought for San Dimas with 10:16 left in the fourth. Kennedy rolled right and when he couldn’t find an open receiver, tucked the ball away and got the score on a one yard run.

The Colts came right back with two more scores on the legs of Ainsworth to close out the scoring for the Covina and put the game away.

The Saints did get a final touchdown with :07 left to play set up by a blocked punt setting San Dimas up with a first and goal at the Colt six.

With the win Covina improves to 4-0 in league and 7-1 overall and takes a commanding lead in the race for the Valle Vista League title.
