It’s All Davis

Joey Davis was dominant running the ball tonight.

(Whittier) – The California defense will be having Joey Davis nightmares for the next week after the Santa Fe running back scored twice on the ground and returned a punt back for a touchdown in the Chiefs 31-10 Del Rio League win.

Davis finished the night with 15 carries for 126 yards.

It was Davis’s 85-yard punt return with twenty-eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter that all but sealed the Condors fate.

Early on it appeared that California could hang with Santa Fe as they managed to drive the ball down field only to be stopped on its opening drive of the game at the Chiefs 7-yard line.

After a Justin Retiz pass went incomplete, Aaron Zaragoza took the handoff from Retiz and sliced through the Condors defense for an 80-yard score.

For the second straight possession California’s drive stalled inside the Chief 25-yard line. Eric Amezquita booted home a 40-yard field goal to cut the lead to four. The closest the Condors could get all night.

Then came the Davis show.

With the score 10-3, Santa Fe started its final drive of the half from its own 15-yard line. Davis took the snap found a hole and race down the sideline only to be collared at the California 30-yard line. Two plays later Davis finished the drive with a seven-yard run to send the Chiefs into the locker room at halftime by two scores.

In the opening drive of the second half, Davis scored from 18-yards to give Santa Fe a 21-point lead. The drive saw two great catches by Christian Mahlstede that helped set up the Chiefs touchdown.

Mahlstede finished the night with four catches for 156 yards.

Chiefs stopped all Condor runners.

The Condors finally crossed the goal line late in the fourth quarter as Lawrence Gomez scampered in from two-yards out with 4:55 remaining.

Lozano and Dankert were held to a combined 126 yards of rushing as the Chiefs defense played stellar.
