West Covina Top Dogs

(Pasadena) Aaron Salgado scored three times and Chris Solomon scored twice to lead the West Covina Bulldogs to a runaway 55-12 victory over the host Pasadena Bulldogs Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Southeast Division playoffs.

The West Covina offense was a model of proficiency scoring on eight out of nine offensive possessions with the ninth being a one play kneel down as time expired to end the game.

The Bulldog scoring barrage started early as a short punt by Pasadena set West Covina up deep in Pasadena territory at the 25. Three plays later Lonzell Barnett got the call on a 14 yard run.

With the Christmas season hear, Pasadena appeared to be in the giving mood when on the ensuing kickoff Cleo Bates had trouble picking up the bounding kickoff. West Covina pounced on the loose ball at the Pasadena 5. One play later Salgado busted his way in for his first score of the evening and before the seats were warm West Covina had a 14-0 lead.

On their ensuing drive Pasadena mounted a 14 play drive and looked to be on the verge of cutting into the West Covina lead. Facing a fourth and eight at the West Covina 16, Pasadena Head Coach Randy Horton made the decision to go for the first instead of electing for the field goal. Brandon Cox came close but ultimately fell a yard short at the West Covina nine.

PHS could do very little on Friday night to stop the WestCo ground attack.

Coach Horton’s decision proved costly as on the first play from scrimmage after getting the ball back on downs, Solomon found a hole and was gone 91 yards to paydirt. Solomon finished the night with 169 yards on just seven carries with two scores.

West Covina scored three more times in the first half on runs by Salgado and Solomon and a 38 yard pass from Chris Caballero to Ryan Crosby.

Pasadena did manage to get into the endzone in the first half on a 15 yard pass from Cox to Ryan Simpson.

The second half was much of the same as the first with West Covina dominating both sides of the ball and getting a 35 yard score from Salgado and a six yard touchdown from DeShon Love.

With time running out in the game and the Pasadena season, Cox led his team on one last scoring drive covering 61 yards and capped with a 50 yard scoring strike to Marcus Green.

Up next for West Covina on their road to defend their title is a road trip to face La Mirada in the Semi-Finals of the Southeast Division playoffs.
