M-Town Beat Down, 67-21

De'Shawn Ramirez has reason to smile after scoring four touchdowns to lead Monrovia's victory

(Whittier) – De’Shawn Ramirez scored four touchdowns on four big plays and Blake Heyworth threw three touchdown passes as Monrovia annihilated Whittier Christian 67-21 Friday night at Whittier College. With the victory the Wildcats advanced to the Mid-Valley Division Semi Finals.

Ramirez, running out of the wildcat for the first time all year, scored on runs of 23, 39 and 51 yards. With Monrovia already leading 54-7, Ramirez returned an interception 104 yards for a touchdown to finish off an extraordinary night.

“We’ve never run that before all year,” said Monrovia Coach Ryan Maddox of the wildcat formation. “It’s a new wrinkle we’ve been working on. At this time of the year, you bring different things out. De’Shawn is very dangerous, so you want to get the ball in his hands.”

Monrovia scored on its first play from scrimmage and never looked back. George Frazier took a pass from Blake Heyworth and rumbled 55 yards for a touchdown and just like that it was 7-0.

Whittier Christian went three and out on its first two possessions and the Wildcats took complete advantage. Ramirez found the end zone on the next series from 23 yards out and Marquise Bias busted a couple of tackles on his way to a 48 yard touchdown run late in the first quarter for a 21-0 lead.

Another Ramirez’ wildcat run resulted in a 39 yard TD run in the second quarter and Heyworth fired another touchdown strike – this one to Mason Bryant for a 63 yard catch and carry.

After Frazier intercepted a pass setting up Monrovia at the Whittier Christian 23, Heyworth scored on a one yard keeper with 15 seconds left until halftime.

Grant Escobar briefly interrupted the M-Town fireworks with a 14 yard touchdown reception from Daniel Chacon but it was still 41-7 at halftime and everything was settled except the final score.

After Ramirez scored again on a 51 yard run and Heyworth found Brett Walsh for a touchdown in the third quarter, Ramirez came up with the play of the night. Ryan Esslinger, who had replaced Chacon, threw a pass into the end zone that was intercepted by Ramirez. With Maddox yelling at first to stay put, Ramirez decided to bring it out. He avoided a couple of defenders and a left a few more in his wake and 104 yards later he was dancing into the other end zone.

Escobar, on a pass, and Joel Rhone on a three yard run, both scored for Whittier Christian in the fourth quarter. On the final play of the game, in fitting fashion, Jacob Bueno, brother of former Monrovia quarterback Nick Bueno, scored on a 44 yard touchdown run.

Ramirez had just four carries but rushed for 123 yards and three scores to go along with his pick six. Heyworth was nine of 12 for 201 yards and three touchdowns. Bias had eight carries for 60 yards and a score.

Escobar caught seven passes for 69 yards and two scores.

Monrovia will now face Covina next week in the Semi Finals; a game that many people believe should be a finals matchup.

“We don’t care when we play them. I’m sure our kids we’ll be nice and amped up and ready to go. You play who you play,” Maddox said.
