Quick Scans: 7/30/09 Edition

by John Scanlan

So there goes that idea. I said on the Mid Valley Sports Show this past Tuesday that there wouldn’t be any major deals. That notion was proven wrong when the Phillies acquired pitcher Cliff Lee from the Indians for 4 prospects. Ironically enough, none of the prospects traded were what the Blue Jays were asking for in a potential Roy Halladay deal. So theoretically, they still could go out and get him. That’s not going to happen but it’s interesting to think about.

The Giants made a blunder by trading for 2B Freddy Sanchez. Sanchez comes with an empty .300 with a low OBP, no slugging, below average fielding and a bad knee. The Giants traded their 2nd best pitching prospect, Tim Alderson. Alderson, who was the team’s first round draft pick in 2007, projects as a 2nd-3rd starter. What was supposed to be a salary dump for the Pirates turned into a steal. Brian Sabean strikes again.

Will the Dodgers make a panic move now that they’ve lost 4 in a row? I wouldn’t bet on it, but stranger things have happened. Nobody saw the Manny Ramirez trade coming last year, so anything is possible. A minor deal for a reliever will probably come down in the next day or two. If GM Ned Colletti trades Chad Billingsley or Clayton Kershaw, though, he’ll have lower approval ratings than Schwarzenegger.

Since this is the last Quick Scans for a while, here are some predictions:

-Dodgers in the NL West, Cubs in the Central and Phils in the East, Cardinals for the Wild Card

-Angels in the AL West, White Sox in the Central, Yankees in the East, Rays for the Wild Card

-The Dodgers will make the NLCS…no predictions past that.

-Brady Quinn in Cleveland and Sage Rosenfels in Minnesota will win their QB battles

-Matt Forte will lead the NFL in all-purpose yards

-Chris Perry will be the NFL Rookie of the Year

-Tom Brady will re-emerge as the top QB in the NFL

-Michael Vick will not take a snap in the NFL this season. Neither will Plaxico Burress.

-In football, Rosemead will win the MVL, San Gabriel the Almont and Monrovia the RHL

-America will continue to not care about soccer.

-I will return at some point to the Mid-Valley.

Thanks for reading. Have a great rest of the summer!
