Quarterfinals Quick Hits

Steve Garrison, who's last stop was Northview, is back in M-Town

Steve Garrison is back in the fold and officially on the coaching staff at Monrovia. He will return next year as well. “That was easy. If I would have known it was that easy I never would have left,” Garrison said after the Wildcats rout of Whittier Christian.

If you get a chance strike up a conversation with Kennedy Bryant, father of Monrovia player Mason Bryant. Dude knows his football, and has some great insight. He played back in the day at Monrovia (class of 1983.) He grew up watching guys like Obie Graves and Dale Bunn who starred for M-Town in the seventies.

Seven of the eight road teams in the Mid-Valley and Southeast Divisions won Friday night with Muir being the exception. Yes San Dimas was on the road.

You got to feel for Steven Rivera, but you also have to feel for guys like Grant Escobar, Taylor Lagace, Marcus Green, Justin Fa’aola, Jake Martinez and Desmond Reed. But four years as a starter…

I didn’t end pretty for Alhambra. But with guys like Josh Mendoza, Oscar Gaytan, Ezra Broadus Sebastian Espinosa and Chris Caraveo all coming back, the future is bright.

I wonder how Rosemead and Baldwin Park feel right now. The Panthers and the Braves both beat San Gabriel this year.

If there can be a turning point in a 55-12 game it was in the first quarter of the Pasadena-West Covina game. After Pasadena went for it on fourth down and was stopped at the West Co nine, Chris Solomon went 91 yards on the next play. 14-3 or even 14-7 turned into a 21-0 in a heartbeat.

Mid Valley Staffer Alex “Gonzo” Gonzalez has already made up his mind about the Mid-Valley Semi Final. “I like Covina!” Gonzo proclaimed. Of course he just got back from covering the Covina- Alhambra game. I covered the Monrovia game. Who do I like? I’ll tell you Tuesday.

Gevontray Ainsworth wasn’t needed against Alhambra. Coach Darryl Thomas pulled him in the first quarter when the Colts got out the gate quickly. He will be needed against Monrovia.

De’Shawn Ramirez just scored again.

I’ll have to check with Monrovia stat guru Wayne to see if 104 yard interception return is a school record. But can you really imagine anybody having one longer?

Why did three different fans/coaches/administrators rip me for taking Whittier Christian Friday night? For the last time I picked Monrovia! Geez!

There were four routs and four close games in the Southeast and Mid-Valley quarters.

Yeah it’s definitely a rebuilding year for La Serna.

You gotta love Andy Guerrero’s description of his game winning TD pass for San Gabriel. “To tell you the truth I was reading my safety. Nothing was open so I had to get out of the pocket. I was going to run then I saw Joey open by himself and Rivera coming from the opposite side. Kerkhoff went deep with Crispy on the wheel and then Joey on the post before Rivera came.”

Are the same guys that said Jude Oliva didn’t know what he was doing two months ago the same guys asking him for Semi Final sideline passes now?

San Dimas is 2-1 against the other three final four teams. The Saints beat San Gabriel and Monrovia but lost to Covina.

West Co- La Mirada is fine. But here in the SGV West Co- Arcadia would have been classic.

Nobody cheered louder than Nick Bueno when his younger brother Jacob scored on a 44 yard run for Monrovia just before the clock expired.

Whittier Christian’s Escobar fought until the end.

I didn’t know if Big Tony Solorzano was having a heart attack late Friday night because he just hiked the stairs to the office or because he just covered La Serna’s heart stopping win over Los Altos.

It’s hard to pick against Muir right now…until West Covina is the opponent.

Vinny Venegas just scored again.

Word is San Gabriel doesn’t have a running game. Yeah they do. It’s called Guerrero.

De’Shawn Ramirez just scored again.
