Lady Stangs Take SGV Classic

Muir captured the SGV Classic in thrilling fashion.

(San Marino) – Two storied schools met in the San Gabriel Valley Classic at San Marino HS on Saturday night and needed an extra quarter to decide the outcome as Muir came from 14 points down to defeat Diamond Ranch, 45-44.

Relatively held in check all night, Lady Stangs center Emoni Jackson picked the perfect time to grab a rebound and score with twenty-seconds remaining in overtime for the winning score.

Cayla Freeman did get a good look for the game-winning shot for the Panthers but the shot hit iron and didn’t fall as time expired.

Two times during the game Diamond Ranch rallied to take large leads in the game. The first occurred in the first quarter as it raced out to a 14-0 lead before Muir’s Tahniya Sweat (11 points) scored on a layup with 1:12 remaining.

It also marked the first of many come from behind moments for the Mustangs as they went on a 9-0 run with Jerrica Daniels (game-high 12 points) firing a buzzer beating three to end the first and Shaela Flynn scores on a layup after a steal to cut the Panthers lead to five.

Muir cut the lead to three on Flynn’s jumper before Panthers forward Erika Williams scored the next five points. Williams (eight points) three-pointer from the top of the key gave Diamond Ranch an eight point lead near the end of the half.

With Williams in foul trouble with 4:35 remaining in the third quarter it was up to Chelsea Barnes (12 points) and Emilee Dy to take up the slack as they turned a one-point deficit into an eight point leading heading into the final quarter.

The final four minutes of the game became a white knuckle ride for fans as each team traded scores until Barnes put the Panthers ahead by one with a free-throw.

Jackson answered with her second field goal of the quarter with 58 seconds remaining to give Muir the one-point lead.

Tai Lark the put back a missed opportunity by Freeman to give Diamond Ranch the one-point lead with just nineteen seconds remaining.

Brandi Dubose then forced Williams to commit her fifth foul that allowed her to go to the charity stripe for the possible game clinching points. Dubose would only make one of two to force the game into overtime.

Tahniya Sweat help lead the Mustangs to the SGV Classic.
