Monrovia Holds off WestCo

(West Covina) – Monrovia and West Covina finally faced off Friday night. No it wasn’t the dream match up that everybody wanted to see on the football field, but instead on the basketball court as Monrovia jumped out to an early lead and held on to beat the Bulldogs 70-67 in the Pride of the Foothills Tournament at West Covina High.

Monrovia started quickly out of the gate with an 8-1 run behind buckets by Carl Daniels and Evan Bough and Hector Medina also hit a three later in the period for a 19-12 first quarter Wildcat lead. 

Jared Valdivez heated up in the second quarter for West Covina knocking down three consecutive bombs from beyond the arc. David  Kim and Stanley Tran both socred five points in the period in a 25 point quarter as the Bulldogs crept to within two at 39-37 at the half.

Jonah Mendoza and Tran both hit threes in the third for West Covina but Justin Mellinger scored five points down low to keep Monrovia up by one heading into the fourth.

Bough scored five big points for M-Town in the final frame and Antoine Gholar hit a couple of free throws to keep the Dogs at bay. Valdivez hit another three for West Covina in the fourth for his sixth three of the night. 

It’s been a struggle for both teams early so far. Monrovia improved to 2-9 with the win while West Covina dropped to 2-8.
