Lancers Take Lady Knights Classic

(El Monte) – For the 10th time in 17 years, Bishop Amat won the Lady Knights Classic on Saturday night by defeating Sonora 50-36. It also marks the fifth straight time Bishop Amat has won the tournament since 2007.

The Lancers used a suffocating defense in the first quarter and deadly outside shooting to open the game on a 16-2 run.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Kaysee Tayang and Paulina Santana allowed Bishop Amat to pull away early from the Raiders.

The key early on for the Lancers on defense was to stop Jasmine Hills from dominating inside. With tournament M.V.P Leeah Powell matching up against her it paid dividends by frustrating the physical center.

Midway through the second quarter even with Bishop Amat’s Dagmar Ramirez and Powell suffering through foul trouble, the deep Lancer bench came through limiting Hills to just three points.

Before the third quarter buzzer sounded Sonora found itself behind by 23 points as Janae Chamois scored the final five points of the half.

The Raiders made a run in the final quarter as Hills finally was able to get to the free throw line and establish inside presence to score nine of her game-high 14 points.
