Off The Cuff: August 6, 2009

Somebody want to tell me what is so wrong with “tweeting”?

All of a sudden, the evil four letter network has decided that it needs power over their individual sports casters before they can send out a tweet.  So much for individuality of the person working at ESPN.

Can you imagine what would happen if Joe Torosian told Duane Barker, John Scanlan and myself not to tweet?  You notice how Tim Peterson isn’t on the list of tweeters.  He is still trying to figure out how to use a typewriter.  Tweeting is going to be foreign to him.

It isn’t just the four letter network that is dropping the hammer on twitter pages.  The NFL has said they will fine players for doing updates to their tweeps.  So now we won’t have Chad Ochocinco say “I smell roast.  LOL, Oh never mind its Antonio Cromartie being burned by me!”

Speaking of Cromartie, he was just fined $2500 for updating his twitter account with his opinion on the food at training camp.  Are you serious?  Since when did saying you didn’t like what the cook made a punishable offense?

I can see Brian France telling NASCAR drivers not to twitter during a race, but it isn’t as if a NFL player is driving 150 miles an hour.  So this whole issue about players not being able to have a little fun while playing is absurd.  There is a reason folks call the NFL the No Fun League.

Am I the only one who thinks it would be great to see what a player tweets right after a huge play or a win?

But that will never happen, with ESPN and the NFL putting the kabash on tweeting, I can just see Joe Torosian dropping the edict here.

But then again I could be wrong.
