Melody Gauthier the MVL's foremost Renaissance Woman

Kick it!

I’ve seen Holly Rowe up close, she’s got the build to go Dupleasis on anyone.

Because they are just out of area and in another division lost on most was the Salesian Mustangs 10-3 season and the marvelous year by Jihad Vercher. The junior quarterback threw 38 touchdown passes and ran for 11 more in 2011. In 2010 he threw 26 scoring passes and ran for another. He has accounted for 76 touchdowns in two seasons…and has another yet to go.

Happy Birthday to former Glendale and Burbank HC Ted Amorosi, he’s 39 today.

I got to meet former UCLA and long time basketball coach Gene Bartow about 12 years ago. He was a very gracious man and very generous of his time with me when I interviewed him at the Forum after an ABA game.

When you are a “specialist”, it means you are specialized, and that you do something better than anyone else. In regards to a kicker, unless your coach routinely asks you to kick 60-yard field goals through blizzard conditions, you are expected to put the ball through the uprights when called upon.

To me the “specialists” divide the team and break downs come easier, destroying cohesiveness, when a “specialist’ fails at his job.

I don’t like them…the kicker and punter should be one of the starting 22.

Did you know they play American Football in France professionally? They do. If you don’t believe me ask former Gabrielino/San Gabriel/La Verne alum Cedric Ho.

Last Add Bartow: Bartow went 52-9 in two years at Westwood after replacing John Wooden. He was run out of town for those nine losses and the lack of an NCAA title. If only the ridiculous Bruins alumni had kept their heads on straight they would not have had a 20 year gap between raising national championship banners.

I’m sorry the comment got through…but at least it gives me a chance to bring it up in my column: Nothing about El Monte quarterback Brandon Martinez is overrated. I like his arm, I like his feet, but what I like best of all is he never quits. Dude can ball…

Just a heads up…We pick a Player of the Year and a Most Valuable Player… The POY award can go to anybody regardless of where there team finished. Thus a Zander Anding out of Burroughs is going to get huge consideration as POY…While, for example, someone like La Serna’s Frankie Palmer who doesn’t have big numbers would be considered for MVP…(Because the Lancers wouldn’t have reached Week 14 without him.)

And you know…or may not know…we only pick one team…no second, third, or honorable mentions.

Really Last Add Bartow: Upon leaving UCLA for Alabama-Birmingham he was asked if he had any advice for the next UCLA basketball coach. “Yes,” he said. “Win.”

Gary Cunningham replaced Bartow and lasted two years. Larry Brown replaced Cunningham and lasted two years. Larry Farmer replaced Brown and lasted three years. Walt Hazzard replaced Farmer and lasted four years before Jim Harrick arrived.

Speaking of basketball; Rosemead’s Melody Gauthier is having a terrific year for the 8-6 Lady Panthers. The junior combo guard is averaging 13 points, 8 boards, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks per game.

Mead and the Lady Knights square off in two weeks at the corner of Mission and Rosemead Boulevard.

Last Note UCLA Basketball HCs: None of the above had losing records. Cunningham went 50-8.

As we talk about the psycho capabilities and actions of those involved with football, remember to add in basketball and a place called UCLA…

Oh, did I forget to mention Sam Gilbert? Don’t know who he is, well all I can say is he wasn’t a UNLV booster.

The Dude abides…
