South Hills Too Much for Arroyo

(El Monte) – South Hills held Arroyo to just four points in the first quarter and led the rest of the way in a 55-44 win over the Knights Friday night at Vern Nelson Fieldhouse.

The Huskies led 9-4 after one and still led by five at halftime, 21-16, behind six points in the paint by Korey Serna, all in the second quarter.  

South Hills quickly opened the lead to 12 in the third with a 9-3 run to open the quarter. Steven Rubin-Woods buried a couple of threes to spark the outburst and scored nine points in the third quarter as the Huskies led by 11 heading into the final frame.

Primitivo Gomez scored nine points in the fourth, including a pair of threes, but the Knights were unable to cut into the deficit. South Hills hit seven of eight free throws in the quarter to hold Arroyo at bay.

Gomez led all scorers with 25 points for Arroyo. He scored in every quarter and hit four from long distance. Gomez was the only Knight in double figures. Edgar Lupercio had nine and Peter Aholoka had six.

Rubin-Woods led South Hills with 15 points, Jeriko Santos scored 11 and Chris Porter and Serna each added nine.

South Hills improved to 11-6 with the victory while Arroyo dropped to 7-9. Both teams will start league play next week.
