Spartans Hold Off Saints for SD Tourney Title

Annie Monroe went 2-for-4 with a run scored in LC's win.

(San Dimas) –  San Dimas Tournament M.V.P Lauren Cox shutdown the vaunted Saints offense for five innings and La Canada’s offense received timely hitting from its three through seven batters in the fourth inning to take the Saints Tourney, 3-2.

Jessica Ogden’s slow roller to short that was misplayed by Brianna Quintana allowed Annie Monroe to score from third for what became the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning.

Cox continued her dominance of opposing batters for five innings as she fanned 12-batters and allowed just one hit through five innings of play.

Down by three runs in its own half of the sixth inning, San Dimas began the inning well as Deenah San Luis bunted herself on. The following batter, Janell Wheaton put a charge into a Cox pitch that travelled down the left-field line that allowed both San Luis and Wheaton to score to cut the lead to one.

During the tournament it has been the senior leadership of Catherine Horner and Cox that allowed La Canada to be in a position to become tournament champions. Horner was instrumental in handling Cox behind the plate and red hot with the bat finishing the tournament, 6-for-13 with a homer and 7-RBI’s while scoring five times.

In her first time throwing a complete seven innings in high school, Cox not only struck out 14 Saints but during the tournament went 16 innings without allowing run and no-hit a hot hitting Glendora squad in Friday’s semifinal.

For three innings the score remained deadlocked at 0-0, until Horner worked a walk and Alyssa Stolmack darted a triple into the right-center field gap that scored Horner. Monroe promptly took a Bethie Celaya pitch up the middle to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

Not lost in the tournament victory was the play of Stolmack , Monroe, Katy Lee and Ogden. Monroe has had the largest shoes to fill as she has replaced Anna Edwards. Stolmack has inherited the cleanup spot and has provided a needed punch in critical times during the first-four games. Lee in just four varsity games after playing JV has shined at second base. Ogden in Saturday’s final began the game with a hit and also came up with the game winning RBI in the sixth inning when La Canada had the bases loaded.

The Spartans will face Arroyo on Tuesday night in a non-league matchup, while San Dimas begins play in the Charter Oak tournament at Big League Dreams on Monday.
