Monrovia Rises to the Top of Rio

Joe Mata fired five shutout innings to lead Monrovia into first place

(Monrovia) – Joe Mata threw five shutout innings and also ripped a two run double to lead Monrovia to a 4-0 win over Temple City Tuesday. With the victory the first place Wildcats moved a game ahead of the Rams in the Rio Hondo league with four to play.

Monrovia jumped on Temple City early with three in the first inning before adding another in the fourth. Mata drove in a pair with a ringing double for the first two runs and Chris Burkholder added a run scoring single.

Justin Jones and the Wildcats now control their own destiny

Mata then sailed through five innings. He allowed just three hits, walked three and struck out three to pick up the victory. Brad Felty came on in the sixth and finished up the final two innings for the Wildcats. Justin Jones contributed two hits and scored a run for M-Town.

Monrovia is now 14-3 and 7-1 in the Rio. Temple City fell to 16-3-1 overall and 6-2 in league.
