LA VERNE, CA – Bonita was unable to take advantage of six Westview of San Diego turnovers and dropped a heartbreaking 21-14 opening night loss.

The Bearcats recovered four fumbles and intercepted the Wolverine quarterbacks twice, but were never able to capitalize on their good fortune of field position.

“I think our defense did a great job of causing turnovers,” said Bonita Head Coach Eric Podley. “The defense hit Westview and hit them hard. It didn’t help that we didn’t practice for two of the six days.”

Westview was finally able to wear down a very tough Bonita defense in the fourth quarter when they went six plays for 62 yards and were able to get the go-ahead touchdown when Ryan Thompson scored from 11-yards out.

Early on it appeared that the Wolverines were in for a tough night, as starting quarterback Tommy Hansen misplayed a shotgun exchange that was recovered by K.C. Huth at the Bearcat 45-yard line.

On Bonita’s first offense series after the fumble recovery, saw a precursor of plays to come as they showed a inability to score on a turnover.

The Bearcats did strike first in the scoring column when junior quarterback Garrett Pendleton found receiver Zach Braumgard on 23-yard fade route in the corner of the end zone.

After a few changes in position, Westview finally got on the board in 2009 as they had their own fade route touchdown as Hansen found Tyler Barclay in one-on-one coverage for a five-yard touchdown.

Bonita didn’t take much time in getting the lead back as Casey Horine took a seemingly innocent pass from Pendleton into a 73-yard touchdown as he shook off three Wolverine tacklers.

Westview would then score late in the first half after making a change at quarterback when Hansen became ineffective. The Wolverines inserted Jordan Erickson, who promptly found Ryan Thompson down the right-sideline for a 30-yard pass and a first and goal. Two plays later Erickson crossed the goal-line to make the score 14-13.

Bonita was led offensively by Pendleton who finished the evening 14 of 24 for 198 yards and two touchdowns. He did have one interception late in the first half that resulted in a Westview score.

Horine led all Bearcat receivers with two catches for 86 yards and a touchdown, while Deron Holmes closed the evening rushing for 71 yards.

Westview’s defensive lineman Adam Terry had two sacks to lead the team.

Bonita had a opportunity late in the game to tie the game, only to have a unsportsmanlike penalty thwart the drive.
