Game Night: Week One

Diamond Ranch will line up against El Rancho

Thursday 8/30

Covina (0-1) at La Puente (0-0)

La Puente has Ivan Vasquez returning at quarterback and looks like a team that will contend in the Montview. The Warriors might be the favorites. It could be a long year for Covina. The Colts defense isn’t bad but offense is struggling. La Puente wins.

La Puente 24 Covina 10

Alhambra (0-1) at La Canada (0-0)

Last Year: Alhambra 34-14

This might sound funny but Alhambra is going to bounce back. Mt. View was better than expected and the Moors came out flat. They won’t this week. La Canada and new coach James Sims might be still a couple of years away.

Alhambra 20 La Canada 13

La Mirada (1-0) at La Habra (1-0)

Last Year: La Habra 28-19

“La Habra has seemed to have our number the last couple of years,” said La Mirada Coach Mike Moschetti. The Matadores win over St. Paul last week was huge while La Habra was impressive as well in beating El Dorado.

With several D-1 players and momentum from the St. Paul win, La Mirada erases that number. La Mirada prevails.

Friday 8/31

Monrovia (0-0) at Ayala (1-0)

Monrovia has been chomping at the bit for the last month. Nice opening win for Ayala over Diamond Bar. Monrovia isn’t Diamond Bar. M-Town gets it done.

Monrovia 31 Ayala 17

Diamond Ranch (1-0) at El Rancho (1-0)

Diamond Ranch opened with a win over Chino while El Rancho was taking care of Marina. The Panthers have some nice weapons in Xavier Beltran and Alan Salguero. D-Ranch has enough.

Diamond Ranch 31 El Rancho 13

Azusa (0-0) at San Dimas (1-0)

Last Year: San Dimas 41-16

The Saints are riding high after last week’s huge win over Bonita in the Smudgepot. They had all their weapons on display. Azusa has some talent but the Aztecs lost a lot too. Azusa might hang around for a half but after that the Saints pull away.

San Dimas 34 Azusa 14

South Hills (1-0) at Bonita (0-1)

Last Year: Tough loss for the Bearcats. They’ll remember that one for awhile. South Hills is coming off a win over Colony. Bonita will be upset just enough to take it out on the Huskies. Look for Reggie Turner to have a big game.

Bonita 27 South Hills 21

South Pasadena (0-0) at San Gabriel (1-0)

Last Year: San Gabriel 27-10

The Mats did what they were supposed to do against Animo. Joseph Mayorga! Despite the loss of quarterback Joey Harmon South Pas still has some players ready to step up. It will happen eventually but this week will be SG’s night. Mats roll.

San Gabriel 35 South Pasadena 14

Arcadia (0-1) at St. Francis (0-0)

Last Year: St. Francis 31-28

Ouch! That hurt! Rio Hondo Prep underrated? Arcadia overrated? Well it might not have been either. The Kares are well coached and play like they always do – tough, disciplined and fundamentally sound. Arcadia was a little banged up (Joey Harmon is out for the year), and they may have came out a little flat. People seem to forget how much Myles Carr, Taylor Lagace and Robbie Haines meant to this team. Now is a bad time to meet St. Francis.

The Golden Knights are loaded as usual and are ready to roll. If the Apaches aren’t careful, it could get out of hand.

St. Francis 38 Arcadia 14

Arroyo (0-1) at Temple City (0-1) – Mid Valley Classic

Last Year: Arroyo 48-21

All Time: Arroyo 17-16

It wasn’t exactly the way Arroyo wanted to start nor Temple City for that matter. A 33-6 loss to Los Altos isn’t good but a 27-0 loss to La Salle is well…let’s just say Coach Mike McFarland won’t include it in the “Temple City way to play football” video.

The Knights had a bad game. The Rams could have a a bad season. Arroyo gets its first.

Arroyo 35 Temple City 7
