Game Night: Week Two

Magarito Beltran and La Serna host Bonita

All games are at 7:00 pm unless otherwise indicated

Thursday 9/6

Covina (1-1) at El Monte (1-1)

Last Year: Covina 52-10

A toss up? Covina was blown out by West Covina but bounced back vs. La Puente. El Monte survived Baldwin Park allowing 41 points and then got torched for 45 by Ontario Christian. The Lions’ offense is fine. It’s the defense that needs to step up. I think it will. Lions prevail.

El Monte 34 Covina 24

Friday 9/7

Temple City (0-2) at  Alhambra (0-2) – Moor Field

Last Year: Alhambra 33-14

Both teams are in dire need of a victory. Alhambra’s offense has had some trouble but Temple City can’t score at all. The Moors two losses have been ugly but the Rams have been outscored 46-0. Alhambra comes out on top.

Alhambra 17 Temple City 7

Gladstone (1-0) at Baldwin Park (0-2)

G-Stone surprised Northview although don’t tell Gladiator HC Albert Sanchez that. Baldwin Park is 0-2 after falling to La Costa Canyon (that doesn’t count.) The Braves can score. We saw that against El Monte. If Gladstone falls behind it will be tough for its offense to do enough to catch up. BP has enough.

Baldwin Park 24 Gladstone 13

El Rancho (1-1) at Bell Gardens (1-0)

Last Year: El Rancho 27-26

Bell Gardens has a running game with Jorge Remegio and a passing game with Charles Ontiveros. BG racked up 36 last week in a win over Torrance. El Rancho lost a shootout with Diamond Ranch but did put up 34. BG wins a wild one.

Bell Gardens 35 El Rancho 31

Bishop Amat (1-0-1) at La Mirada (2-0)

Last Year: Bishop Amat 49-13

The Matadores got worked last year by Bishop Amat but they also fell to St. Paul and La Habra. They have already avenged those two losses. They’re will be plenty of weapons on both sides of the ball. It will be a field day for college recruiters. With guys like Johnny Hills, Dallas Shipp, Dionza Blue and Darren Andrews there will be a lot of points scored. La Mirada scores more.

La Mirada 38 Bishop Amat 35

La Puente (0-1) at Arroyo (1-1)

Neither team has really had the start that they wanted. Arroyo evened its record last week by beating Temple City but weren’t the Knights supposed to do that? La Puente got blown out by Covina. The Warriors have an experienced quarterback in Ivan Vasquez but he needs to avoid miscues. Arroyo is hoping to get enough out of Nathan Coto and Peter Aholoka. The Knights should have enough, especially defensively.

Arroyo 24 La Puente 16

Maranatha (0-2) at Azusa (0-1) – Citrus College

Last Year: Maranatha 47-28

This won’t be the offensive explosion of last year. Guys like Darrien McGee and Desmond Reed are gone. Maranatha needs to right the ship after a pair of losses. Azusa was flattened by San Dimas in Week One. Andrew Elffers should put up some numbers in this one. Azusa might not have an answer. Minutemen get their first.

Maranatha 28 Azusa 13.

San Gabriel (1-1) at San Dimas (2-0)

Last Year: 9/16/11: San Dimas 59-6, 12/3/11 CIF Mid-Valley Semi Final: San Gabriel 29-28

It was a tale of two games last year. San Dimas annihilated San Gabriel in the regular season only to be stunned in the Semi Finals. The Saints look like a machine again this year. They’ve scored 87 points in two games. The Matadors gave up 49 to South Pas last week. It would take another monumental upset for the Mats to pull it off. I don’t think they will. Saints roll.

San Dimas 41 San Gabriel 17

West Covina (1-1) at South Hills (2-0) – Covina District Field

Last Year: West Covina 35-33

We can’t beat up the Bulldogs too much over a loss to Loyola. The Albert Rodriguez era at South Hills is off to a perfect start. The Huskies will put up a fight. The game could be a lot like last year’s. But the WC comes out on top in the end.

West Covina 31 South Hills 24

Arcadia (0-2) at Monrovia (0-1)

Last Year: Arcadia 30-22

Arcadia, after suffering heavy losses to graduation, isn’t close to the team that beat Monrovia last year. The Wildcats? Well, they may be better than the 2011 edition. Plus they’ll be foaming at the mouth for a victory after losing to Ayala last week. St. Francis beat Arcadia last week 49-10. Monrovia is better than St. Francis. This one might get uglier than a Quentin Tarantino film.

Monrovia 42 Arcadia 7

Bonita (0-2) at La Serna (2-0) at California

Last Year: La Serna 21-20

The Lancers and Bearcats are going in opposite directions. La Serna imroved to 2-0 after taking down Downey in OT. Frankie Palmer and company are getting it done. Bonita is still hurting from the Smudgepot loss. Last week the Cats were shut down by South Hills. La Serna win its third straight.

La Serna 21 Bonita 14
