(San Marino)- There is a popular saying stating ‘bad things happen in threes.’ Friday night the San Marino Titans proved this theory wrong, shutting out Gabrielino for the third year in a row, 34-0.
Playing without superstar Stevie Yortsos, suspended for one game due to an incident in last year’s play-off loss to Paraclete, the Titans turned to a vaunted defense and ground attack to continue their dominance of the Eagles.
After a slow first two drives that ended with an interception and punt, the Titans went to work, scoring on their next four possessions. After an Eagle punt, the Titans put together an 11 play- 80 yard drive, highlighted by a Kwame Do 37 yard run, and capped off by a Benny Hung six yard run to take the lead. Following another Eagle punt, Joe Forgatch lead the Titans on a five play drive to take a 13-0 lead at the half.
The Titans came out strong in the second half, scoring on a seven play, 59 yard drive to open the half and blow the game wide open. The Titans took advantage of two Eagle fumbles in their own territory to cap the scoring.
The Titan defense dominated, forcing three turnovers and allowing only 115 yards of total offense, including no yards passing in the second half. Offensively the Titans rushed for over 210 yards, led by Hung’s 92. Joe Forgatch managed the game effectively, making plays with his feet and completing 14 of 17 passes.
The loss set the Eagles back to 0-2, while the win gave the Titans their third straight shut out victory over Gabrielino in the season opener. The Titans, with Yortsos back in uniform, stay at home to face La Salle next week, 21-14 winners over Maranatha Friday Night.
