South Hills Picks off a Win

By Corey Kwok

(Covina District Field) – South Hills sophomore running back Jamel Hart rushed for two scores, the defense intercepted four passes and tight end Dakota Behr took a pitch option throw 34 yards to the house as South Hills cruised past Ayala 21-3 Friday night to open the 2009 campaign.

The  Huskie secondary handled all the dirty work halting the Bulldogs four times inside Dawg territory and stifling them to 16 yards net rushing while also intercepting Ayala’s Ryan Orozco on four occasions to solidify the win.

Andrew Roddy came up with two of the picks while Hernandez and Vaughns snatched one apiece.

Hart totaled 57 yards on 16 carries to lead the Dawgs’ ground attack and drew South Hills’ initial score late in the first.

Huskie quarterback Booth finished 7-15 for 89 yards. Jittered by a slow start, Booth later straightened out for completions of 36 and 25 yards to Ify Umodu and Geoff Vaughns, respectively.

Jacob Shirley threw the rock once, finding Umodu for a 32 yard catch. The Booth-Hernandez-Behr end zone connection unfolded on the next play with 1:12 left in the third quarter bell and South Hills leading 14-0. Shirley performed decently on special teams as a punter, amassing 253 yards on six tries. Three were 50 yards or better.

Ayala faced a second and 12 back in its own territory towards the end of the third and coughed up the pigskin. Several South Hills linebackers jumped after it in a frenzy to recover it two yards short of the goal line. Four plays later and 1:48 into the fourth quarter, Hart sneaked in from one yard out for TD number two, giving the Huskies a comfortable 21-0 cushion.

The Bulldogs spoiled the shutout with 46 seconds to go in regulation as Jacob Osborne sailed a 35 yard field goal through the uprights.

Ayala’s Orozco closed the night throwing for 134 yards on an 11-27, four interception night. Dylan Lada contributed 18 yards on tow of two in relief.
