Azusa Conquered By Don Lugo

Not much room to run for Josh Dillon and the Aztecs

(Glendora) The Azusa Aztecs (1-3) held the Don Lugo Conquistadores (2-2) scoreless in the first quarter but that would be the only quarter as Don Lugo put up 27 unanswered points en route to a 39-14 win Thursday night at Citrus College.

The Conquistadores broke open the scoring with 7:31 left in the second quarter on a 22-yard pass from Marc Wiseman to Marcus Helton.

Two more first half scores on a 59-yard run by Jorge Montelongo Jr. and a nine yard pass from Wiseman to Jaylen Hall.

If turnovers are a sign of youth on a football team, Azusa showed they were young turning the ball over three times in the first half (five total) resulting in two of the first three Don Lugo scores.

Down 27-0 midway through the third period, Azusa put together a scoring drive that was set up by a kick return by Alex Cota to the Conquistador 38. Eight plays later Jose Ledesma found Josh Dillon over the middle and the Aztec tight end muscled his way into the endzone for a 26-yard score. Dillon managed four catches for 45-yards and the score.

After a short kick was recovered by Don Lugo at their own 46, the Conquistadores needed only one play to push the lead back to 26. Terree Gordon took a hand off and knifed his way through the Azusa defense and was gone 54-yards to paydirt. Don Lugo pounded the rock for a total of 273-yards.

The Aztecs caught a little lightening in the third when Ledesma found Carlos Montiel for a 70-yard score. Montiel finished the evening with four catches for 123-yards and the lone touchdown. After Jesus Arteaga’s extra point Azusa found themselves still trailing 33-14.

Early in the fourth, Don Lugo put together a 12 play 69-yard drive capped by a 17-yard scoring pass from Wiseman to Hunter Grap to ice the game. There were those on the field and on the Aztec sideline who thought the pass was incomplete as it seemed to have short hopped into Grap’s hands.

The Aztecs move on to Montview League play next week at Citrus College against the Bassett Olympians.
