1.)—The Pittsburgh Steelers traded cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Dallas Cowboys late Wednesday night. Cowboys receive: CB Joey Porter Jr….Steelers receive: a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick—the one Pittsburgh originally sent Dallas in the George Pickens trade.
2.)—Yankees sweep the Red Sox. New York beat Boston 9-2 behind Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, and Luis García Jr. to finish a two-game AL Wild Card sweep. The Yankees move on to an ALDS against Tampa Bay; Aaron Judge’s return remains uncertain.
3.)—“With Yorba Linda forfeiting all its games they are now eligible to take a spot in D6- D8 and win a championship.”—MVS commenter, “In the Know”
4.)—The Colorado Avalanche beat the Los Angeles Kings, 8-4, on Wednesday night at Ball Arena in Denver in the season opener for both teams. Attendance was 18,092.
5.)—On this day in 1975 Muhammad Ali TKO’s Joe Frazier before the start of the 15th round in the “Thrilla in Manila.”
6.)—Padres sweep the Cubs. San Diego won 4-1 on Gavin Sheets’ pinch-hit two-run homer and a combined five-hitter. The Padres, winners of 20 of their last 23, advance to face the top-seeded Brewers.
7.)—The Pittsburgh Steelers go to Cleveland tonight to face the Browns in Thursday Night Football. Both teams are 2-1.
8.)—On this date in 1932: Babe Ruth’s “called shot” in Game 3 of the World Series at Wrigley Field. After being taunted by the Cubs, he pointed toward center and homered of off Charlie Root.
Root until his death in 1970 denied that Ruth ever called his shot. Cubs second baseman Woody English said, “That big SOB wasn’t calling his shot. He was pointing to center field and asking the refs how he was supposed to hit with all those white shirts. And then when the reporters asked him if he pointed he played it up.”
