G-Stone Doubles up Bassett, 44-22

Christian Arteaga had nine receptions for 98 yards

(Citrus College) – Gladstone overcame an early 9-0 deficit, shut out Bassett in the second half and went on to beat the Olympians 44-22 Thursday night at Citrus College.

It was the usual suspect doing the damage for the Gladiators. Kevin Amezquita played a part in all of the touchdowns for G-Stone. He threw for three scores and ran for three more while also running in three two point conversions. He finished the night with 242 yards passing and 90 yards rushing.

Christian Arteaga had a big night as well with nine receptions for 98 yards. Sergio Torres has just three catches but two of them went for touchdowns and he had 101 yards receiving.

Gladstone stayed perfect with the win improving to 6-0 and 3-0 in league.

“We’re extremely happy both offensively and defensively. I wish we would have played a little better in the first half but we’re still happy,” said Gladstone Coach Albert Sanchez. “To be able to adjust and follow the game plan, that’s the main thing.”

It didn’t start well for the Gladiators. A couple of penalties and then an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone on Amezquita resulted in a safety for Bassett and a 2-0 lead. On the next series Jamal Greenfield capped a 55 yard drive with a three yard touchdown catch from Nicolas Colmenero and stunningly it was 9-0 Bassett.

“They came out and punched us. Give credit to Bassett,” Sanchez said.

Amezquita and Torres connected on a big play for a 55 yard touchdown on the next series and Amezquita ran in the two point conversion.

Joshua De La Torre pounded into the endzone from the one yard line to finish a 75 yard march early in the second quarter for a 15-8 Olympian advantage. G-Stone came right back with a 53 yard drive culminating with a 17 yard TD run by Amezquita to tie it.

Bassett had one more bullett in the gun. Colmenero threw a swing pass to Greenfield and he turned it into a 67 yard play as he broke it down to the two yard line. De La Torre then slammed in again on the next play for a 22-15 lead with 5:34 left in the half. It was the last time the Olympians scored.

Amezquita’s two yard run and two point conversion gave Gladstone it’s first lead 23-22 at the half.

In the third quarter Torres did his thing again, catching a 32 yard TD strike from Amezquita. This followed another short scoring run by Amezquita and the Gladiators had broken it open.

Scott Torres hauled in a 14 yard touchdown toss from Amezquita in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring. The Gladiators forced Bassett into two turnovers to help seal the victory. Juan Aladana had two interceptions.

Bassett did rack up over 200 yards on the ground between Christopher Rios (66), De La Torre (56) Greenfield (52) and Ricky Mejia (41). Basset fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league.

Next up for the undefeated Gladiators is a date next Friday night with Duarte.
