C-Town Shuts Down Baldwin Park

Covina’s Michael Peters, being interviewed here by Tribune wordsmith John Honell, picked off two passes and returned a punt 76-yards for a touchdown in the Colts 35-0 victory over Baldwin Park on Thursday night.

(Covina)- Covina defended its turf with solid defense, Baldwin Park came in with a suspect offense, and the result turned out as expected with the Colts taking a 35-0 decision from the Braves on Thursday night.

Covina, now 5-2, 2-1 in league, is very much the surprise of the 2012 season after a coaching change, devastating graduation losses, and transfers.

“I don’t listen to what other people say,” said Colts HC Joe Brown. “We have good players, they come to practice every day and they work hard. I can’t complain. We take care of business and we control our own destiny.”

C-Town also controlled the game as they built a 21-0 halftime lead.

Shazeb Mallick scored the first of his two touchdowns with 3:59 to play in the first quarter on a 1-yard run.

“We’re just feeding him the ball and he’s running hard,” said Brown of Mallick.

The lead grew to 14-0 when quarterback Emilio Zertuche hooked up with Evan Stretton for a 55-yard touchdown pass.

Then with under a minute to go before the break Mike Peters found a hole on a punt return and went 76-yards to paydirt.

“He’s a heckuva a player,” said Brown of Peters who also intercepted two passes on the  night.

Baldwin Park started sophomore Hector Moran at quarterback, but the Braves offense continued to struggle.

“Covina came in with a good plan, they saw what we had and did a good job,” said Baldwin Park HC Chris Williams.

In the third Mallick scored on a 4-yard run and Pernell Smalley closed the scoring with 6:22 left to play when he went 46-yards down the sideline.

The Braves fell to 0-7 on the season, 0-3 in the Valle Vista.
