Lancers Finish Fast, 30-13

Jorge Remigio rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns for BG

(Bell Gardens) – Jorge Remigio rushed for 105-yards and two scores including a 76-yard dash to paydirt in the fourth quarter to lead Bell Gardens to a 30-13 win over Alhambra Friday night in the Almont League opener.

The Lancers broke open a close game in the fourth quarter running off three consecutive touchdowns to open up a 30-7 lead and put it away.

It was the offense that finished off Alhambra but it was the defense that made a big play to turn the momentum. Trailing 10-7, the Moors drove down to the Bell Gardens one yard line where they faced a fourth and goal in the fourth quarter. Ezra Broadus slammed into the line but he was slammed back by the BG front and thrown for a two yard loss. Sophomore linebacker Erick Galicia led the charge along with a host of other Lancers.

“That was huge. That changed the game,” said Bell Gardens Coach David Ramos.

The Lancers on the verge of relinquishing the lead immediately extended it on the ensuing series. Five plays in Jorge Remigio hit the corner, raced past the Moor secondary and went 76 yards for a touchdown with 4:26 left. As Remigio crossed the goal line, you could see the air leaving Alhambra’s balloon.

The Moors fumbled the kick off and BG cashed in again. Charles Ontiveros connected with Gerry Coronel for a 31 yard touchdown and a three point game just a minute and a half before was suddenly 23-7.

Less than three minutes later, after the Lancer defense forced the Moors to punt, Julian Romero got loose on a 34 yard touchdown run and the rout was on.

Alhambra scored on the last play of the game when Armando Amaya hit Oscar Gaytan, for a 32 yard catch and carry. Gaytan hit the pylon for six as the clock hit zeroes. It was too little, too late for Alhambra, who was playing without Head Coach Joe Kanach who is on administrative leave. Athletic Director Jerry De Santis is filling in on an interim basis.

Bell Gardens got on the board on its first possession. They marched 63 yards on seven plays. Remigio scored on a two yard run to finish it and he also caught a 22 yard pass.

The score remained 7-0 until the third quarter when Ricardo Pena booted a 32 yard field goal to put BG up 10-7.

Broadus scored on a one yard run to complete a 75 yard drive with a 1:37 left in the third to cut the lead to 10-7. The Moors were primed to score again until they were stopped and the Lancers turned it on.

Ontiveros rushed for 64 yards and threw for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Broadus was the workhorse for Alhambra carrying the ball 18 times for 128 yards and a score.

“We decided to go back to what we do best and that’s run the ball,” Ramos said. “We kind of it going and we just pounded them. That’s what we do.”

The Lancers accumulated 273yards overall on the ground.

Bell Gardens improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league while Alhambra fell to 2-4 and 0-1.
