(Rowland) – For the seventh straight time in the series, Rowland defeated Montebello in a non-league tussle 42-12.

“We shut it down the second half,” said Rowland head coach Craig Snyder.  “To Montebello’s credit they played for 48 minutes and our kids didn’t.  That is what happens when you have so many young kids.”

Raider running back Josh Onovughe carried the ball 16 times for 210 yards and a touchdown leading the route of the Oilers.

After Montebello’s kicker Sergio Cervantes missed a field goal from 42-yards, Rowland took over at their  20-yard line.  It took the Raiders one play to score as Onovughe was able to find a hole and run 80-yards for a score.

Rowland was able to counter Onovughe’s rushing with quarterback Michael Ball’s passing as he finished the evening, seven of eleven for 121 yards and three touchdowns.  He also added a one on the ground and pitched in on defense with a great sliding interception in the second quarter that led to a score.

After the Oilers lost Joseph Marrone early in the first quarter, it was up to running back Eric Espinosa to carry the load.  It took Espinosa two quarters to get acclimated to the offense, but was virtually unstoppable the second half as he rushed for 188 yards and a touchdown.

“It is always a big blow to lose a big player like Joseph,” said Montebello head coach Pete Gonzalez.  “They (Rowland) were prepared to play football tonight.”

Ball’s counterpart at quarterback Dylan Gomez had a rough night as he finished the evening six of twelve for 49-yards and two interceptions.  He also lost a fumble on the center exchange late in the game.  Gomez ran for one touchdown as well.

The game was never in any doubt as the Raiders built up a 28-0 lead at the half on an Onovughe two-yard run with 7:10 to play in the half.

Montebello would finally get on the board in the second half when Gomez snuck in a score from the one-foot line to make the score 28-6 in favor of Rowland.

The Oilers were given a rude indication that tonight was not their night on the first play of the fourth quarter. Ball went back to pass and found Leanardo Freeman for a first-down, only to have it go out of his hands and bounce into the waiting arms of Steve David who waltzed in for a touchdown to make the score 42-6.
