(West Covina) – Reggie Turner Jr. rushed for 213 yards and five touchdowns as Bonita solidified its hold on the top spot in the Hacienda League as they knocked off the two-time Southeast Division champions, West Covina, 38-21, Friday night at West Covina High. Turner also had 68 yards receiving.
Since the start of League play, the Bearcats (4-3, 4-0) have been undefeated as Turner has rolled through defenses like a hot knife through butter. This week, it was the Bulldogs (4-4, 2-2) who were burned by Turner’s performance. But more importantly, the loss ended all hopes of the Bulldogs earning a third-straight Hacienda League crown.
Turner put the Bearcats up midway through the first quarter on a 24-yard run, but on the ensuing possession by the Bulldogs, Turner intercepted quarterback Antonio Hull and returned the ball 10 yards for a touchdown, putting the Bearcats up 13-0.
In the second, while trailing 24-7, the Bulldogs closed the gap with a 16-yard pass to Sydney Jones with 13 seconds left in the half, sending the game into the half with the Bulldogs down 24-14. In the third, Turner scored again on the Bearcats’ first drive of the half, giving the Bearcats a 31-14 lead, but the Bulldogs responded with a 44-yard run by David Ford with about 1- minutes left to cut the lead to 31-21.
Midway through the fourth, The Bulldogs were driving into Bearcats’ territory but their drive stalled at the Bearcat 37-yard line as Hull’s quarterback keeper on fourth-and-six ended up short, turning the ball over. On the ensuing play, Turner scored his final touchdown as he took a hand 0ff and broke the Bulldogs’ secondary for a 69-yard score.
The Bearcats will travel to Los Altos to take on the Conquerors while the Bulldogs take their bye week before returning to action on October 26 when they host Diamond Bar.
